The problem is that my Fn key is stuck; it won't let me type, it's not physically pressed, and sometimes restarting the device fixes it, but the error soon returns.

I notice this because every time I press Esc, the Fn Lock message appears or normally i nead to press Fn + Space to light up my keyboard lights but now I only need to press Space to light the lights up, and that's when I can no longer use the rest of the keyboard.

I've tried cleaning the key, but that doesn't solve the problem. I have a Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon Gen 8 laptop and right now I'm using an external keyboard to write. Will I have to replace the keyboard? Could it be a driver problem? Is there a program that can help me disable the Fn key specifically?

1

On a Lenovo laptop, usually you just need to press Fn + Esc to toggle off the Function Lock on your keyboard.

2

If that does not resolve the problem, boot your laptop into BIOS.

In BIOS search for a setting to toggle between Function Keys and Media/Action Keys and apply that, then save those settings and restart your laptop.

3

If that does not resolve the problem.

Open the pre-installed Lenovo Vantage app.

Go to Device - Input & Accessories.

Under the Keyboard top row function section, are you able to disable the function lock from there.

This behavior is consistent with a hardware issue on the built‑in keyboard rather than a Windows driver or configuration problem.

From the provided information, the following checks and steps are relevant:

    1. Confirm whether the issue is hardware
      • Use an external keyboard (as already done). If the external keyboard works normally while the built‑in keyboard misbehaves, this strongly indicates a hardware problem with the laptop keyboard.
      • If possible, test the built‑in keyboard in firmware/UEFI (if the device supports it). If the Fn behavior is abnormal even before Windows loads, it is not a Windows driver issue.
    2. Rule out accessibility or keyboard mode settings
      • In Windows 11, go to Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard and ensure features like Sticky Keys or Filter Keys are not changing how keys behave. These can cause unexpected keyboard behavior but will not usually cause a single Fn key to appear “stuck.”
    3. Check for debris or physical damage
      • Intermittent or stuck‑like behavior can be caused by debris under keys. Use compressed air to blow under and around the Fn key and other affected keys, and gently clean the keyboard surface. If the issue persists, it is likely a deeper hardware fault.
    4. Test on another device (for external keyboards)
      • For external keyboards, Microsoft recommends connecting the device to another PC to confirm if the device itself is faulty. For a built‑in laptop keyboard, this is not possible, but the same principle applies: since the external keyboard works fine, the built‑in keyboard is likely the failing component.
    5. When to consider replacement
      • If the built‑in keyboard continues to show stuck Fn behavior, and the external keyboard works correctly, the most probable resolution is keyboard replacement or system hardware service.
      • This aligns with guidance that if keys are damaged or not functioning correctly after cleaning and basic checks, the keyboard is likely experiencing a hardware failure and needs service.

There is no supported Windows tool to selectively disable only the built‑in Fn key at a low level. The practical workaround is to continue using an external keyboard and arrange hardware service or keyboard replacement for the laptop.
