Microsoft 365 subscription billing currency is tied to the country/region of the subscription’s billing account and cannot be changed to another currency (for example, from USD to INR) on an existing subscription.
For Microsoft 365 business subscriptions, the country/region where the organization is headquartered determines available services, taxes, billing currency, and data center location. That country/region cannot be edited. To move billing to India (and thus INR where applicable), a new account and subscription must be created in the India region:
- Keep using the current subscription until close to its expiry, or cancel it if an immediate move is required.
- Sign up for a new Microsoft 365 account, selecting India as the country/region during sign-up.
- Purchase a new Microsoft 365 subscription under this new India-based account.
- Migrate data (mailboxes, files, etc.) from the old tenant to the new one as needed.
For consumer Microsoft 365 subscriptions (personal/family), the same principle applies in practice: to change billing currency, cancel the existing subscription, let it expire, then repurchase in the new region after ensuring the Microsoft account profile and Microsoft Store region are set to India.
Note that simply changing the profile or Store region does not change the subscription’s underlying billing country/region or currency.
