Hello,

I recently had to factory wipe my mobile phone. I have previously been successful in restoring using my Microsoft email I used for many years. However, it now says that there is backup to restore. Could you help?

On Android, Microsoft Authenticator can only restore from a cloud backup that was previously created on an Android device and stored under a personal Microsoft account.

Check these points to understand why no backup is found and what to do next:

    1. Verify backup was enabled on the old phone
      • On Android, backups are only created if Cloud Backup was turned on in Authenticator under Settings → Backup and a Microsoft personal account was selected as the recovery account.
      • If this was never enabled on the old device, there is no cloud backup available and nothing can be restored.
    2. Confirm the correct Microsoft account and device type
      • Only one backup per device type and per recovery account is supported.
      • Backups are device-type specific: accounts backed up on iOS cannot be restored on Android, and vice versa.
      • Ensure signing in with the same personal Microsoft account that was used as the recovery account on the old Android device.
    3. Use the correct restore flow on Android
      • On the new Android phone, open Authenticator.
      • Before signing into any account, select Restore from backup.
      • Sign in with the same personal Microsoft account used for backup.
      • If a valid backup exists for that account and device type, Authenticator will list it and restore the accounts.
    4. If “Restore from backup” is not visible
      • If Restore from backup or Begin recovery is not shown when opening Authenticator, remove or sign out of all accounts in the app first, then reopen it so the restore option appears. How to sign out from Authenticator explains how to clear accounts.
    5. When no backup is available
      • If, after using the correct Microsoft account and restore flow, Authenticator still reports no backup, then there is no usable backup in the cloud (for example, backup was never enabled, was deleted, or used a different device type/account).
      • In that case, accounts must be added again manually. Follow the guidance in How to add your accounts to Microsoft Authenticator.

If access to the backup/recovery Microsoft account itself is lost, use the Microsoft account sign-in helper linked in the restore article to regain access to that account first.
