Authenticator going to old phone

Notifications are still being sent to the device where Microsoft Authenticator was last used. To move them off the old phone and onto a new one, both unregister the old device and set up Authenticator again.

Follow these steps:

1. Remove the old device from the account
   • For a personal Microsoft account:
     • Go to the two-step verification area of the Account Security page.
     • Turn off verification for the old device so it is forgotten/unregistered.
   • For a work or school account:
     • Go to the two-step verification area of your My Apps page or your organization’s company portal.
     • Turn off verification for the old device.
2. Set up Authenticator on the new phone
   • Install Microsoft Authenticator on the new phone.
   • For a personal Microsoft account, open Authenticator, choose Add account, select Personal Microsoft account, and sign in with the username and password to re-register the device for notifications.
   • For a work or school account, follow the sign-in/MFA setup instructions provided by the organization when prompted at sign-in.
3. If a push is still going to the old device when registering a credential
   • Choose a different verification method during sign-in (such as SMS, if available) to complete sign-in once.
   • Then remove the old device as described above and re-add Authenticator on the new phone.

This ensures notifications stop going to the broken phone and are delivered only to the new device.
