Microsoft 365 features that help users manage their subscriptions, account settings, and billing information.
To get a refund on a Microsoft 365 subscription purchased from Microsoft, cancellation must be completed first. After cancellation, eligibility for a refund depends on country/region and subscription details.
Follow these steps for a Microsoft 365 Basic, Personal, Family, or Premium subscription bought directly from Microsoft:
- Go to the Services & subscriptions page for Microsoft 365:
- Sign in with the same Microsoft account that was used to buy the subscription.
- It is important to use the purchasing account; otherwise, the subscription will not appear.
- Locate the Microsoft 365 subscription and select Manage.
- If Turn on recurring billing is shown instead of Manage, the subscription is already set to expire on the date shown and will not be charged again. In that case, no further action is needed for cancellation.
- On the next page, select Cancel (or Upgrade or Cancel, depending on what is shown).
- Scroll through and follow the on-screen instructions to complete cancellation.
- This process determines whether a refund is offered based on the Microsoft Store Terms of Sale and local refund rules.
- In some countries (for example Canada, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Israel, Korea, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Turkey), prorated refunds may apply depending on subscription length and renewal status. Details are in the “Countries with prorated refunds for Microsoft subscriptions” article linked from the cancellation pages.
Key points:
- Not all cancellations result in a refund; eligibility is evaluated during the cancellation flow.
- If the subscription was purchased through a third party (for example Google Play, Apple App Store, Amazon, Best Buy), Microsoft cannot process the refund. In that case, contact the retailer’s support directly and follow their refund process.
- If the charge is not recognized or appears duplicated, use the billing investigation guidance first, then cancel and request a refund if eligible.
If the online cancellation flow does not present a refund option but a refund is still believed to be due (for example, billing errors or unrecognized charges), contact Microsoft Support directly from the support site and choose a billing/subscription category so an agent can review the account and applicable refund policy.
