Install Visio 2021 on laptop that has Office 2021

Hi. I am trying to install Microsoft Visio 2021 Professional on a pretty new laptop that has Microsoft Office 2021 installed. I get a message that I have to remove Office 2021 and Office 365 to complete the installation. I removed the Office 365 as it was a trial version that came with the computer that I never used. However, I use Office 2021 all the time. I am scared to remove Office 2021, as what will it take to reinstall it. I am running Windows 11.

Please let me know how to properly install Visio on my machine without too much trouble.

Thanks!

Visio 2021 Professional can usually be installed side‑by‑side with Office 2021, but only if the versions and installation technologies are compatible.

Key compatibility rules from the context:

  1. Products with the same version (16.0 for Office/Visio 2016–2024) cannot be mixed between Click‑to‑Run and MSI:
    • “You can't install two products with the same version but different installation technologies.”
    • Office 2021 and Visio 2021 both use version 16.0 and are normally Click‑to‑Run.
  2. All installed products must match in bitness (32‑bit or 64‑bit):
    • “You can't install a 32-bit version of Visio on the same computer with a 64-bit version of Office.”
  3. Visio is a separate product and is not included in the Office suite:
    • It must be installed as its own app, either as a desktop app (Visio Plan 2 or perpetual Visio 2024/2021/2019/2016) or used via the web (Visio Plan 1).

Why the “must remove Office” message appears

Because Office 2021 and Visio 2021 share version 16.0, the installer blocks combinations that break the rules above. Typical causes:

  • Office 2021 is Click‑to‑Run and the Visio 2021 media is MSI (volume license) or vice versa.
  • The Visio installer is a different bitness than Office (e.g., 32‑bit Visio vs 64‑bit Office).

How to install Visio 2021 with minimal trouble

  1. Confirm Office 2021 installation type and bitness
    • In an Office app (e.g., Word) go to File → Account → About Word and note:
      • Version: 16.0.xxxx (Office 2021)
      • Bitness: 32‑bit or 64‑bit
      • Installation technology (Click‑to‑Run vs MSI) as indicated in the About dialog.
  2. Match Visio 2021 to Office 2021
    • Use a Visio 2021 installer that:
      • Uses the same installation technology as Office 2021 (usually Click‑to‑Run for retail/consumer Office 2021).
      • Uses the same bitness (32‑bit or 64‑bit) as Office 2021.
    • If Visio came as a retail/non‑subscription product (Visio Professional 2021), install it from the same Microsoft account portal used for Office 2021 so both are Click‑to‑Run and aligned.
  3. If the installer still insists on removing Office 2021
    • This indicates a technology mismatch (Click‑to‑Run vs MSI) that is not supported for the same version.
    • In that case, to keep both Office 2021 and Visio 2021, both must be provided in the same technology (for consumers, typically both as Click‑to‑Run). Work with the seller/IT admin to obtain a Visio 2021 package that matches Office 2021’s technology and bitness.
  4. If Office 2021 must be removed and reinstalled
    • Office 2021 is tied to a Microsoft account or product key. It can be reinstalled from that account after uninstalling, as described in the Office 2021 install article.
    • Uninstall Office 2021 via Control Panel → Programs and Features → Office, then reinstall from the account portal following the documented steps.

Once both products share:

  • Version 16.0,
  • Same installation technology (both Click‑to‑Run), and
  • Same bitness (both 32‑bit or both 64‑bit),

Office 2021 and Visio 2021 can run side‑by‑side on the same Windows 11 PC.
