    1. Check Registry Settings

If you're comfortable with editing the registry:

    • Open Registry Editor (search for regedit.exe) and navigate to:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\ClickToRun\Configuration

    • Look for the key SharedComputerLicensing and ensure its value is set to 0 (or remove it entirely if not needed).

    Hi,

I take that there is an activation error on the device.

    • Quit all Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote) and close Microsoft AutoUpdate.
    • Open Finder > Go > Go to Folder, then navigate to:
        ~/Library/Group Containers/

    • Delete the folder:
        UBF8T346G9.Office

    • Go to:
        ~/Library/Containers/

and delete any Office-related containers, such as:
        com.microsoft.Word

    com.microsoft.Excel com.microsoft.Powerpoint com.microsoft.Outlook com.microsoft.onenote.mac

    - Open **Keychain Access** and remove Office-related credentials, including entries containing:

Microsoft Office Identities Cache Microsoft Office Identities Settings ADAL MSAL Microsoft 365

    - Restart the Mac.

    - Open an Office application and sign in again to reactivate Office.

I’m eager to hear back and work together to find a solution.

    Hello Martyn,

Thank you for posting your question.

Error code 0x80004005 is a generic activation error that can occur when Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Defender is unable to validate the assigned license or communicate with the Microsoft activation service.

Please try the following troubleshooting steps:

    1. Confirm that the Microsoft account you are using has an active Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Defender subscription.
    2. Sign out of all Microsoft applications on your Mac, then sign back in using the licensed Microsoft account.
    3. Open a Microsoft 365 application and select Help > Check for Updates to ensure you are running the latest version.
    4. Restart your Mac and attempt the activation again.
    5. If you are using a VPN, proxy, or firewall, temporarily disable it and retry the activation process.
    6. Verify that there are no ongoing Microsoft service outages that could affect activation.

If the issue persists, please provide the following information:

    • The Microsoft product you are trying to activate.
    • Whether this is a new installation or a previously activated device.
    • The complete error message or a screenshot (with any personal information removed).

This information will help determine whether the issue is related to licensing, account authentication, or activation service connectivity.

    Kind regards,

    Shyamala Bhargavi

    • Which Microsoft product are you trying to activate?
    • Is this a new installation or a previously activated device?
    • What steps are you following during the activation process?
    • Can you share the complete error message or a screenshot (with any personal information removed)?

In the meantime, please try the following troubleshooting steps:

    1. Verify that the Microsoft account being used has an active subscription and an assigned license.
    2. Sign out of all Microsoft applications and sign back in using the licensed account.
    3. Ensure that macOS and all Microsoft applications are updated to the latest version.
    4. Check your network connection and confirm that no firewall, proxy, or VPN is blocking access to Microsoft services.
    5. Restart your Mac and attempt the activation process again.

Once additional details are available, the community will be able to provide more targeted troubleshooting recommendations.

    Kind regards,

    Shyamala Bhargavi
