Microsoft 365 features that help users manage their subscriptions, account settings, and billing information.
To stop any further renewals and address the unwanted charge, follow these steps:
- Confirm the subscription and turn off recurring billing
- Go to the Services & subscriptions page: https://account.microsoft.com/services and sign in with the same Microsoft account that was used to buy the subscription.
- Find the Microsoft 365 (or other) subscription that was renewed.
- Select Manage.
- If you see Turn off recurring billing, select it and follow the prompts. This prevents any future automatic renewals. If you see Turn on recurring billing, recurring billing is already off and the subscription will end on the date shown.
- Cancel the subscription
- On the same Manage page, select Cancel (or Upgrade or Cancel, depending on the subscription).
- Follow the on‑screen steps to complete cancellation. You will usually keep access until the end of the paid period.
- Check why the charge still occurred
If a charge was taken even though cancellation was attempted:
- Cancellation must be more than 2 days before the billing date. If it was too close to the renewal date, the renewal can still go through. Check the end date on the Services & subscriptions page.
- The renewal may be tied to a different Microsoft account. If there are multiple accounts, sign in to each at https://account.microsoft.com/services and check for an active subscription.
- If the subscription was bought through a third party
If the subscription was purchased from a retailer or app store (for example, Amazon, Best Buy, Google Play, Apple App Store):
- Microsoft cannot cancel or manage billing for that subscription.
- Contact that retailer’s or app store’s customer support directly to cancel and request a refund, as they received the payment.
- Request a refund (if eligible)
- First cancel the subscription as above.
- Not all cancellations result in a refund, but eligibility can be checked using the refund guidance for Microsoft subscriptions.
- In some countries (for example, Canada, Israel, Korea, Turkey, and certain longer renewed subscriptions in some EU countries), a prorated refund may be available.
- If the charge is not recognized or you still cannot resolve it
- Use the Manage your payments section of the Microsoft account dashboard to investigate the billing charge from Microsoft.
- If the charge cannot be matched to any Microsoft account or subscription, work with the bank or card issuer to dispute the transaction and block future charges.
These steps stop future renewals, explain why a renewal may still have gone through, and provide the official paths to cancellation and possible refund.
