A Microsoft app for iOS and Android devices that enables authentication with two-factor verification, phone sign-in, and code generation
Updating the email used with Microsoft Authenticator requires changing the aliases on the underlying Microsoft account, then reusing Authenticator with the updated sign-in.
Follow these steps to update the email on the Microsoft account, then reconfigure Authenticator:
- Change or add the new email alias on the Microsoft account
- Go to Manage how you sign in to Microsoft at https://account.live.com/names/manage and sign in with the current (old) email.
- Select Add email.
- Add the new email address and complete the verification process.
- After verification, select Make primary next to the new email if it should become the main sign-in alias.
- Optionally select Remove next to the old email if it should no longer be used (ensure at least one other alias exists before removing the primary alias).
- Ensure security/verification info is up to date
- If verification codes are going to an old or defunct email, sign in to the security info page at https://account.live.com/proofs/Manage.
- Use an existing working method (alternate email or phone) to verify identity.
- Update or replace outdated security info. If none of the listed methods work, choose I don't have any of these when prompted and follow the steps to replace security information. Be aware that replacing all security info can put the account into a restricted state for 30 days.
- Reconfigure Microsoft Authenticator
- On the mobile device, open Microsoft Authenticator.
- If the account still shows the old email alias, remove that account entry from Authenticator.
- Add a new Work or school or Personal (Microsoft) account, then sign in using the updated primary email alias and password.
- Complete any MFA prompts to finish setup.
If sign-in fails because verification codes are not received, use the security-info replacement path described above to regain access, then repeat the Authenticator setup.
