Locked out of my Business Account

Hello,

I am locked out of my Microsoft 365 business account due to the authenticator app on my phone failing and no longer set up with the business account. I have called the support number four times and cannot make it past the AI support chat bot to get the problem resolved.

I am not sure what to do next.

Since access to the Microsoft 365 business account is blocked by Microsoft Authenticator and there is no working alternative MFA method, the next step is to get Microsoft’s Data Protection team involved through a support request. Regular forum moderators or community channels cannot reset MFA or bypass verification.

Use these approaches, in order:

  1. Call Microsoft support and get routed to Data Protection
    • Use the appropriate number from the global Customer service phone numbers.
    • When the IVR/AI asks what the problem is, clearly state keywords that route to the right queue, for example:
      • “Authenticator”
      • “Office 365 for business”
      • Confirm it is a “company account,” not education.
      • Confirm “administrator” when asked.
      • When asked if there is another administrator, answer “No.”
      • When asked if a service request is needed, answer “Yes.”
    • The goal is to have the frontline agent open a ticket and escalate to the Data Protection team for an admin MFA reset/tenant lockout.
  2. If the hotline keeps looping or won’t connect to an agent
    • Create a temporary Microsoft 365 trial tenant so that the admin center can be used to open a ticket:
      1. Sign up for a Microsoft 365 trial tenant (business/enterprise plan) as described in the Q&A guidance.
      2. After the new tenant is created, go to the Microsoft 365 admin center (https://admin.microsoft.com).
      3. In the admin center, select Support > Help & support.
      4. Open a support request and explicitly state:
        • Locked out of a different existing Microsoft 365 tenant.
        • The locked tenant’s domain and admin username.
        • That this is a tenant admin MFA reset / tenant lockout and that there is no other global admin.
        • Request escalation to the Data Protection team.
    • This trial tenant is only a channel to reach support; it does not give access to data in the original tenant.
    • After the original tenant issue is resolved, cancel the trial subscription in Billing > Your products in the trial tenant to avoid charges.
  3. If this is not the only admin on the tenant
    • Any other global admin can sign in to the Microsoft Entra admin center and reset MFA for the locked-out admin by requiring re‑registration of multifactor authentication on that account, as described in the Q&A examples.

Only Microsoft support (specifically the Data Protection team) can verify identity and reset MFA when the sole admin is locked out. Continue insisting on a service request for an admin MFA reset/tenant lockout when interacting with phone support or via the trial-tenant ticket.
