Microsoft 365 features that help users manage their subscriptions, account settings, and billing information.
To move from Microsoft 365 Personal to a Microsoft 365 Family subscription that is being shared by a spouse, use these steps and notes:
- Accept the Family sharing invite from the spouse’s Microsoft 365 Family subscription.
- The owner of the Family subscription manages sharing at the subscription sharing page: View sharing.
- The owner can see and manage who is sharing, and invite or stop sharing as needed.
- Cancel or let the existing Microsoft 365 Personal subscription expire.
- Sign in with the current Personal subscription account at https://account.microsoft.com/services.
- Locate the Microsoft 365 Personal subscription and select Manage → Cancel subscription (or Upgrade or Cancel).
- Follow the prompts to complete cancellation.
- If Turn on recurring billing is shown instead of Cancel, the subscription is already set to expire on the date shown and will not renew.
- Ensure that the same Microsoft account is used for OneDrive and for joining the Family subscription.
- Files stored in OneDrive remain in the account even if the Personal subscription is cancelled.
- After joining the Family subscription, that same account will receive the Family plan benefits (including OneDrive storage), so cloud files are preserved.
Important storage considerations when cancelling the Personal subscription:
- When a Microsoft 365 Personal subscription is cancelled and there is no other active Microsoft 365 subscription on that account, the storage allowance reverts to the free 5 GB of cloud storage plus 15 GB of Outlook.com storage.
- If the account is over the free storage limit and not yet covered by the Family subscription, the following can occur:
- Uploading, editing, or syncing new files to OneDrive may be blocked.
- Sending or receiving email in Outlook.com may be blocked.
- After 6 months, OneDrive and its files may be deleted.
To avoid any risk to files, ensure that:
- The spouse’s Family subscription is active and sharing is enabled to this Microsoft account before or immediately after cancelling the Personal subscription.
- The account remains within the storage limits provided by the Family subscription.
If already part of the spouse’s Family subscription when cancelling the Personal subscription, OneDrive and other Microsoft 365 benefits continue under the Family plan, and cloud files are retained.
