Unreliable Cast from Win 11 Home PC to LG Smart TV

My Cast connection from my PC to my LG Smart TV is unreliable, and I can't find a certain way to re-establish it when it goes down. I've run the Bluetooth Troubleshooter, which does find corrections to make, but the Devices list shows the TV as Not Connected - even when it IS casting properly!

Is there a definitive set of instructions for setting this connection up successfully first time?

I presume that I should have Chromecast enabled on the TV?

Hello,

You don’t need Chromecast for Windows “Cast”.

Windows uses Miracast, which works over Wi‑Fi Direct, not Bluetooth or Chromecast.

Miracast is often unstable because most TVs (including LG) have very little RAM and their Miracast implementation is limited.

So drops, delay, and stuttering are normal with this technology.

To make it as stable as possible:

Use 5 GHz Wi‑Fi

Enable LG Screen Share / Miracast

Update the PC’s Wi‑Fi and GPU drivers
(get the latest drivers from your PC manufacturer)

Restart the TV when the connection becomes unstable

If you need a truly reliable connection, Miracast has limits.

Use a direct HDMI cable connection instead.

For a reliable cast connection from a Windows 11 Home PC to an LG Smart TV, use Miracast (Windows “Cast”) and then stabilize the connection with a few checks and resets. Chromecast on the TV is not required for Miracast; the TV (or adapter) must support Miracast.

    Follow these steps in order:

    1. Verify Miracast support and basic setup
      1. On the Windows 11 PC, press Windows logo key + K.
        • If a message appears saying an external display must be connected with a cable, the PC does not support Miracast.
      2. Make sure Wi‑Fi is turned on on the PC: select the Network icon on the taskbar and confirm the Wi‑Fi quick setting is enabled.
      3. On the LG TV, ensure its wireless display / screen share feature is turned on and that it supports Miracast. If it does not, use a Miracast adapter (dongle) on the TV’s HDMI port.
    2. Connect using Cast
      1. Turn on the LG TV (or Miracast adapter) and wait until it shows it is ready to connect.
      2. On the PC, press Windows logo key + K.
      3. In the list of available devices, select the LG TV (or adapter) to start casting.
      4. Follow any on‑screen instructions on the TV or PC. When complete, the screen should mirror or extend to the TV.
    3. Stabilize an unreliable connection If the connection drops or is unreliable, use these steps:
      1. Install the latest Windows and driver updates
        • Go to Start > Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates and install all available updates.
        • This resolves many common wireless display issues.
      2. Update TV/adapter firmware
        • Check the LG TV or adapter manufacturer’s support site or app for firmware updates and install them.
      3. Restart devices and adapter
        • Turn the LG TV off and back on.
        • Restart the PC.
        • If using a Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter or similar:
          • Unplug the adapter from the TV’s HDMI and USB ports.
          • Restart the PC.
          • Plug the adapter back into the TV and wait for “Ready to connect,” then reconnect from Windows logo key + K.
      4. Remove and re‑add the wireless display
        • On Windows 11: Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices.
        • Under Wireless displays & docks, select the TV/adapter, choose More options > Remove device.
        • Then select Add device > Wireless display or dock and reconnect.
      5. Check HDMI and USB power (if using an adapter)
        • Ensure the HDMI end is firmly connected to the TV’s HDMI port.
        • Ensure the USB end is connected to a stable USB power source (preferably a wall‑powered USB charger rather than a TV USB port if power is unstable).
    4. About the Devices list showing “Not Connected” The Devices list in Settings may show the TV or adapter as Not Connected even when casting is active. This status can lag behind or not reflect the current Miracast session. The reliable way to check connection state is via Windows logo key + K (Cast flyout) and by confirming the TV is displaying the PC screen.
    5. When to use Chromecast Windows 11’s built‑in Cast feature uses Miracast, not Chromecast. Chromecast on the LG TV is only needed if using a browser or app that specifically casts via Chromecast (for example, certain web browsers or media apps). For standard Windows screen mirroring, ensure Miracast is enabled/available on the TV or via a Miracast adapter; Chromecast is not required.

If problems persist after all steps above, remove and re‑add the wireless display again and confirm all firmware and Windows updates are current.
