Microsoft 365 features that help users manage their subscriptions, account settings, and billing information.
Use the Microsoft account alias and security pages to re-trigger verification and ensure the new address is correctly added and set as primary.
- Confirm the new email is added as an alias
- Go to Manage how you sign in to Microsoft: https://account.live.com/names/manage ("Edit account info").
- Sign in with the email/phone that already works.
- Under Account username / aliases, check that the new email address appears.
- If it does not appear, select Add email and follow the steps to add it as an alias.
- Re-send and complete the verification for the new email
- On the same Manage how you sign in to Microsoft page, look for a Verify button next to the new email.
- Select Verify, then Send email.
- Open the inbox for the new email address and find the verification message.
- Click the verification link in that email. It may open a generic profile/info page, but as long as it completes without error, the alias should become verified.
- Check that the alias is actually verified
- Refresh the Manage how you sign in to Microsoft page.
- Confirm that the Verify button is gone and the new email shows as verified (no warning or verify prompt).
- Make the new email the primary alias
- Still on Manage how you sign in to Microsoft, select Make primary next to the newly verified email address.
- If desired, remove the old email by selecting Remove next to it (note the warning: removing a Microsoft-domain alias like @outlook.com, @hotmail.com, etc. permanently deletes that alias and it cannot be reused on another Microsoft account).
- If verification keeps failing or the link seems to do nothing
- Try opening the verification link in a different browser or an InPrivate/Incognito window while signed in to the correct Microsoft account.
- If prompted to verify identity but the code is going to an old/defunct address, choose I don't have any of these on the verification screen and follow the prompts to replace the security information with a current email or phone. Be aware that replacing all security info can put the account into a restricted state for up to 30 days.
Once the alias shows as verified and is set as primary, it becomes the main email for sign-in and for receiving verification codes (along with any additional verification methods configured).
