Microsoft 365 features that help users manage their subscriptions, account settings, and billing information.
A Microsoft 365 subscription cannot be transferred into the name of someone who has died, but the service can continue to be used or renewed by either:
- Renewing the existing subscription (if still accessible)
- If the Microsoft account and password are available, sign in with that account and renew the subscription in the usual way:
- Either turn on or keep recurring billing enabled, or
- Redeem a new product key at https://microsoft365.com/setup to extend the subscription.
- When redeeming a new key, always make sure the correct Microsoft account is signed in, because the subscription time is attached to that account, not to the person’s name.
- The subscription can be extended up to 5 years by entering additional product keys.
- If the Microsoft account and password are available, sign in with that account and renew the subscription in the usual way:
- Creating and using a new subscription in a personal account
- If access to the deceased person’s Microsoft account is not available or appropriate, create or use an existing personal Microsoft account and purchase a new Microsoft 365 subscription on that account instead.
- Files stored in OneDrive or emails in Outlook under the deceased person’s account are not automatically moved; access to those requires going through Microsoft’s bereavement process (see below).
- Requesting access to the deceased person’s Microsoft account (if needed)
- To access Outlook.com, OneDrive, or other Microsoft services in the deceased person’s account (for example, for probate), Microsoft requires a legal process.
- The process and required documents vary by region (for example, death certificate, proof of legal successorship, and ID). Details and regional variations are described in the bereavement support article.
For ongoing use of Microsoft 365 at home, the simplest practical approach is usually either:
- Continue renewing under the existing account if it is already signed in on the devices, or
- Start a new subscription under a personal Microsoft account and move files there over time (if access is available).
