Follow these steps to clear stuck Family Safety/parental controls when the account is no longer in a Microsoft Family but restrictions still apply on Windows/Xbox:
- Confirm the account is not in any Family group
- Go to https://account.microsoft.com/family and sign in.
- If no family members are shown, the account is not currently part of a family group.
- Run the Family Safety reset task on each affected Windows device
Family Safety settings can remain cached on devices even after leaving a family group. Use the built‑in reset task:
- On the keyboard, press and hold Windows key, then press R to open Run.
- Type
cmdand select OK to open Command Prompt. - In Command Prompt, enter:
then press Enter.schtasks /run /tn "Microsoft\Windows\Shell\FamilySafetyRefreshTask" - Restart the PC.
- Repeat these steps on every Windows device where the account is used.
- If still blocked on Xbox multiplayer/friends
- If the account was ever part of a Microsoft Family, it may also be in an Xbox family group with child restrictions.
- A known workaround is:
- Join a trusted person’s Microsoft family with them as organizer and this account as a member.
- Have the organizer sign in to https://account.microsoft.com/family and set all Family Safety/Xbox online safety settings for this account to Allow.
- Ensure Xbox and Windows 10/11 online safety settings for this account are set to allow multiplayer, adding friends, and communication.
- Sign out of Xbox apps/games on the PC, restart the PC, then sign back in.
- After confirming restrictions are gone, the account can leave that family; the relaxed settings typically persist.
If these steps are followed on all impacted devices, cached Family Safety restrictions should be removed so the account can add friends and use Xbox multiplayer normally.
