Stale Apple subscription entitlement - Apple subscription expired but still active in Microsoft backend”

I had purchased a free trial for Microsoft Teams on my phone through Apple. This subscription was cancelled and expired on May 14, 2026. My husband purchased a Microsoft 365 subscription directly from Microsoft.com on May 27, 2026. He added and shared me as a family member. However, Microsoft won't let me be added, and I can't use Microsoft 365 because it says there is no license associated with my personal email.

Microsoft Support Agents have told me that my personal subscription is still active through Apple, and this is why I can't use the same email for the family sharing subscription. I have verified with Apple that the subscription has ended and is no longer active. I have provided the proof from Apple to Microsoft Support Agents. They still insist they cannot do anything about my personal account's subscription and that it needs to be resolved by Apple. How do I regain access to write and edit my documents now? I need to activate Microsoft 365 under the family plan.

The Apple trial and the Microsoft 365 Family subscription are separate entitlements. The Apple trial must be fully ended in Apple’s system, and the Microsoft 365 Family license must be correctly assigned to the same Microsoft account that is signed into the apps.

Use these steps to regain access and activate under the Family plan:

    1. Confirm the Apple subscription is fully ended
      • On the iPhone, go to Settings > [name] > Subscriptions and verify there is no active Microsoft 365/Teams subscription listed.
      • If any Microsoft 365/Office/Teams subscription still shows as active, cancel it there. Apple subscriptions purchased in-app are managed only from this Apple Subscriptions area.
      • If it is not listed or shows as expired, Apple’s side is already correct.
    2. Confirm the correct Microsoft 365 Family license exists and is active
      • The family organizer (husband) should sign in to https://account.microsoft.com/services with the account used to buy Microsoft 365 Family.
      • Under the Microsoft 365 heading, verify that:
        • The product is Microsoft 365 Family (not Basic or Personal).
        • The subscription status is active and not expired or suspended.
    3. Ensure the family sharing invitation is to the correct Microsoft account
      • The organizer must add the same Microsoft account email that is used to sign into Word/Excel/Teams on the phone and PC.
      • If the email being added is different from the one used in the apps, the apps will show “no license associated with this email.”
    4. Sign out of all Office/Teams apps and sign back in with the family-licensed account
      • On iOS (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, Microsoft 365 app):
        1. Open each app.
        2. Go to Settings > Account and sign out.
        3. Close the apps completely.
        4. Reopen one app (for example Word) and sign in with the Microsoft account that is part of the Family subscription.
      • On desktop Office apps (Word, Excel, etc.):
        1. Close all Office apps.
        2. Open Word.
        3. Go to File > Account.
        4. Under User Information, sign out, then sign in with the family-licensed Microsoft account.
        5. Use Update license (if shown) to refresh activation.
    5. Verify there is a valid license on the account
      • If still seeing “no license associated with this email,” check which license is actually assigned:
      • If the account shows Microsoft 365 Basic only, note that this plan does not include the right to install desktop apps; it only provides OneDrive storage and web apps. In that case, ensure the Family license is correctly assigned and that the apps are signed into the Family-licensed account.
    6. If the Apple purchase is still incorrectly associated to another Microsoft account
      • For Apple-originated Office/Microsoft 365 purchases, subscriptions are associated with the Microsoft account used when the purchase was made. If the Apple trial was tied to a different Microsoft account than the one now used for Family, sign out of the apps and sign in with the account originally used for the Apple purchase, then:
        • Follow the guidance in Restore previous purchase articles (for Mac/iOS) to refresh entitlements, then sign back into the Family-licensed account.
    7. If the problem persists
      • Since Apple confirms the subscription is ended, and if the Microsoft 365 Family subscription is active and correctly shared but the account still shows no license, contact Microsoft Support again and provide:
        • Screenshot of https://account.microsoft.com/services showing the Family subscription and the account as a member.
        • Screenshot from Settings > [name] > Subscriptions on iOS showing no active Microsoft 365/Teams subscription.
      • Ask support to verify and correct the license association on the Microsoft account so that the Family license is recognized.

Once the correct Microsoft account is part of the Family subscription and all Office apps are signed into that same account, Word and other apps will activate and allow editing and creating documents again.
