Use the following steps to get the Aux (external) microphone working instead of the built-in array mic in Windows 11.

  1. Check the physical connection
  • Make sure the headset/mic plug is fully inserted into the combo audio jack.
  • If the device has a mute switch or button, ensure it is not muted.
  1. Select the correct input device
  1. Select Start > Settings > System > Sound.
  2. Under Input, open Choose a device for speaking or recording.
  3. Select the external mic/Aux device (not the “Microphone Array” or built‑in mic).
  4. To confirm, select the > next to the chosen device, then use Start test under Microphone test, speak into the Aux mic, then Stop test and Play the recorded sample.
  1. Make sure apps and Windows can use the mic
  1. Go to Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone.
  2. Ensure Microphone access is turned On.
  3. Ensure Let apps access your microphone is On and that the apps used for recording/meetings are allowed.
  4. If using desktop apps, make sure Let desktop apps access your microphone is turned On.
  1. Adjust microphone levels
  1. In Settings > System > Sound, under Input, select the external mic.
  2. Adjust the Input volume slider so that speaking into the Aux mic shows activity in the level meter.
  3. Optionally, select Start test again to verify the level is adequate.
  1. Run the audio troubleshooter
  1. Go to Settings > System > Sound.
  2. Scroll to Advanced and choose Input devices under Troubleshoot common sound problems.
  3. Follow the troubleshooter’s guidance for the external mic.
  1. Reinstall or update audio drivers if the Aux mic is not detected at all
  1. Right‑click Start and select Device Manager.
  2. Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
  3. Right‑click the audio device and select Uninstall device. Check Attempt to remove/Delete the driver for this device, then select Uninstall.
  4. Restart the PC. Windows will reinstall audio devices automatically. If not, in Device Manager, right‑click Sound, video and game controllers and select Scan for hardware changes.
  5. After restart, in Device Manager, right‑click the audio driver and select Update driver.

If the built‑in mic works but the Aux mic still does not, repeat step 2 to confirm the correct device is selected and step 4 to ensure levels are not set too low.

    Hi ,

Search for msinfo32.exe in the search bar, take a screenshot, and post it here so we can see the correct laptop model or desktop configuration.

Is the microphone connection USB or jack?

    Thanks
