Use the following steps to get the Aux (external) microphone working instead of the built-in array mic in Windows 11.
- Check the physical connection
- Make sure the headset/mic plug is fully inserted into the combo audio jack.
- If the device has a mute switch or button, ensure it is not muted.
- Select the correct input device
- Select Start > Settings > System > Sound.
- Under Input, open Choose a device for speaking or recording.
- Select the external mic/Aux device (not the “Microphone Array” or built‑in mic).
- To confirm, select the > next to the chosen device, then use Start test under Microphone test, speak into the Aux mic, then Stop test and Play the recorded sample.
- Make sure apps and Windows can use the mic
- Go to Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone.
- Ensure Microphone access is turned On.
- Ensure Let apps access your microphone is On and that the apps used for recording/meetings are allowed.
- If using desktop apps, make sure Let desktop apps access your microphone is turned On.
- Adjust microphone levels
- In Settings > System > Sound, under Input, select the external mic.
- Adjust the Input volume slider so that speaking into the Aux mic shows activity in the level meter.
- Optionally, select Start test again to verify the level is adequate.
- Run the audio troubleshooter
- Go to Settings > System > Sound.
- Scroll to Advanced and choose Input devices under Troubleshoot common sound problems.
- Follow the troubleshooter’s guidance for the external mic.
- Reinstall or update audio drivers if the Aux mic is not detected at all
- Right‑click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right‑click the audio device and select Uninstall device. Check Attempt to remove/Delete the driver for this device, then select Uninstall.
- Restart the PC. Windows will reinstall audio devices automatically. If not, in Device Manager, right‑click Sound, video and game controllers and select Scan for hardware changes.
- After restart, in Device Manager, right‑click the audio driver and select Update driver.
If the built‑in mic works but the Aux mic still does not, repeat step 2 to confirm the correct device is selected and step 4 to ensure levels are not set too low.
