I had the share plan, purchased for our business but ended up not needed it so i was the only one who did, the package is done and about to expire, i did not see it but can i just get a basic one, or do i even need it? the only app i use is word i use google for everything else like sheets and docs for example and I use g-mail. is there really a point.? I worried if i don't something vexing will happen and I can for example, use my desktop or open emails, etc. sorry if aske a redundant or fullish question. I guess what I'm saying is the 129.00 that I'm to pay, for a service i don't use is ridiculous don't you think so? thank you for your help in this matter.

If only Word is used and the current Microsoft 365 Family (or shared) subscription is about to expire, there is no requirement to keep that plan if the benefits are not needed.

Key points based on the available plans:

  1. What happens if the subscription expires
  • Files remain intact and accessible.
  • Desktop Office apps (like Word installed on the computer) go into reduced functionality mode: documents can still be opened, viewed, and printed, but new documents cannot be created and existing ones cannot be edited.
  • OneDrive storage benefit reverts to the free quota (typically 5 GB), but files are not deleted immediately.
  1. Whether any plan is needed
  • If desktop Word on the computer is relied on for creating and editing documents, a plan that includes desktop apps is required (for example, Microsoft 365 Personal or Family). Microsoft 365 Basic does not include desktop apps.
  • If using the free web versions of Word and other apps is acceptable, signing in at Microsoft365.com with a Microsoft account provides access to free web Word plus 5 GB of OneDrive storage without paying for a subscription.
  1. Cheaper alternatives if only basic storage and web apps are needed
  • Microsoft 365 Basic is a lower-cost personal plan that provides:
    • 100 GB of cloud storage across OneDrive and Outlook.
    • Secure, ad-free Outlook email.
    • Web and mobile experiences for Microsoft 365 apps.
  • It does not include desktop Word, Excel, or PowerPoint.
  1. Business vs personal plans
  • For a single individual who mainly needs Word and already uses Google for most work, a personal plan (or even just the free web apps) is usually sufficient.
  • A business plan is more appropriate only if business-class email, Teams meetings, and other business features are required.

In practice:

  • If desktop Word is essential: move from the current shared/family plan to a lower-cost plan that still includes desktop apps (such as Microsoft 365 Personal) rather than renewing a more expensive plan that is not being fully used.
  • If desktop Word is not essential and web Word is acceptable: allow the current subscription to expire and use the free web apps at Microsoft365.com, or optionally subscribe to Microsoft 365 Basic for extra storage and Outlook benefits.

Nothing about the subscription affects the ability to use the computer itself, Gmail, or non-Microsoft services. The main impact is on desktop Office apps and OneDrive storage.

Hi @vince upperman,

From what you shared, I understand that you previously purchased a shared (family-style) Microsoft 365 plan for your business, but in reality you’re the only one using it. Since it’s about to renew at $129/year, you’re wondering if you really need it, especially since you mainly use Word and rely on Google services (Docs, Sheets, Gmail) for everything else. You’re also concerned that if you don’t renew, something might stop working on your computer or email

I would like to clarify that:

  • If you cancel or let the subscription expire, your computer itself and Gmail will continue to work normally (those are not dependent on Microsoft 365).
  • What changes is the Office apps (like Word): after expiry, they go into a reduced or read-only mode, meaning you can open and print files, but you may not be able to edit or create new documents in the desktop app.

Based on what you’ve described so far, here are your possible options:

1/ If you only need basic Word: You can cancel the subscription and use Word for free on the web, which may be enough for your needs.

2/ If you still want the desktop Word app but only for yourself: You could switch to Microsoft 365 Personal, which is cheaper than the Family plan.

3/ If you prefer not to pay yearly at all: You can buy a one-time Office purchase (like Office 2024), which gives you Word on your computer without a subscription.  For more information: Buy Microsoft Office 2024

Important note: If you cancel, your OneDrive storage may drop back to the free limit. If you have files stored there, you may want to download or review them before cancelling.

Please understand that the initial response does not always resolve the issue immediately. However, with your help and more detailed information, we can work together to find a solution.

Your detailed response will help us diagnose and investigate the issue more efficiently. If I misunderstood what you’re looking for, feel free to let me know or share a screenshot. I’d be happy to help further!

Thank you for your cooperation. I'm looking forward for your reply.
