Follow these steps to stabilize sign-in across Windows and Xbox for the same Microsoft account:
- Verify and secure the Microsoft account
- Go to the Microsoft account sign-in page and sign in using the current working password.
- If the password is repeatedly being rejected or you see “too many attempts” even on first try, use the Sign-in Helper tool to check for account issues: the article “I can't sign in to my Microsoft account” points to this helper.
- If the account might be blocked or under protection due to suspicious activity, follow the guidance under Recover lost access to your Microsoft account and, if needed, Help with the Microsoft account recovery form.
- Reset the Microsoft account password once, then stop changing it daily
- Use the official Reset your password flow from the “Forgot your Microsoft account password” article.
- After resetting, sign out of all devices (Windows PC, Xbox console, Xbox app, mobile apps) and then sign back in with the new password.
- Avoid changing the password again unless prompted by Microsoft; repeated changes can trigger additional security checks and sign-in throttling.
- Fix Windows sign-in (PIN vs password)
- Since the PIN stopped working and was recreated, confirm the underlying account password is valid:
- On the Windows sign-in screen, choose Sign-in options and use the password instead of PIN.
- If the password fails, follow Change or reset your Windows password or Forgot your Microsoft account password as listed in “Troubleshoot Problems Signing In to Windows”.
- If Windows sign-in issues persist, use the Windows sign-in troubleshooting steps:
- Restart the device (optionally Update and restart if updates are pending).
- If needed, boot into Safe Mode and sign in with the account password (PIN/biometrics are not available there). This confirms the account credentials themselves are valid.
- Check for verification-code and security-info problems
- If the account is repeatedly asking for verification or blocking sign-in, there may be issues with security info:
- Review “Troubleshoot Microsoft verification code issues”.
- If the phone/email for codes is outdated or inaccessible, when prompted during sign-in choose I don't have any of these and follow the flow to update backup security info.
- If the account shows security-info changes pending, be aware this can restrict the account for up to 30 days.
- Address “too many attempts” / Error 400–style behavior
- The “I can't sign in to my Microsoft account” and verification-code articles note that:
- Error 400 or similar can indicate the sign-in request with password could not be processed; use the linked guidance to help fix it.
- If sign-in issues continue, use the Sign-in Helper tool referenced in both the Windows sign-in and Microsoft account sign-in articles to identify and fix common account problems.
- If the username or password appears to “stop working”
- Follow the “My username and password have stopped working” steps:
- Use Recover your account and ensure the correct email domain is used (for example, outlook.com vs outlook.co.uk, hotmail.com, live.com).
- If the email is not recognized, try any aliases or phone numbers associated with the account.
- Complete the security-code verification and set a new password once.
- When to contact support
- If, after using the Sign-in Helper and recovery flows, the account still repeatedly locks or rejects the correct password, use the Contact support option in “My username and password have stopped working” and explain that the same Microsoft account works on Windows but repeatedly fails on Xbox with “too many attempts”.
These steps align the Microsoft account credentials, ensure security info is valid, and use the official tools that detect and clear sign-in and throttling issues that can affect both Windows and Xbox sign-in.
