How to get a 6 digit code vs 8 digit

Hi, my authenticator app is showing an email address on the main page and not the code. When you click on it it then takes to an 8 digit code on "ways to sign in or verify" but the file authenticator code that I need is a 6 digit code like the other ones I see on my authenticator page.

The 6‑digit and 8‑digit values in Microsoft Authenticator are both time‑based one‑time passwords (TOTPs), but different services can be configured to expect different code lengths. The app shows whatever format was configured when that account was added.

    In this case:

    • The account that shows only an email on the main page and then an 8‑digit code under “ways to sign in or verify” is configured to use 8‑digit OTPs.
    • If the sign‑in page is explicitly asking for a 6‑digit code, that sign‑in policy is expecting a 6‑digit TOTP, not the 8‑digit one currently configured.

To resolve the mismatch, one of the following must happen (depending on who owns the tenant/account):

    1. The MFA registration for that account must be reset and re‑registered so it issues the correct type of code for that service, or
    2. The tenant admin (for work/school or partner tenants) must reset the user’s MFA and require re‑registration, then the user re‑adds the account in Authenticator using the method required by the service.

For organizational accounts where the app does not show the expected OTP format, the documented resolution is to have Microsoft support (Data Protection team) or a tenant administrator reset the MFA registration so it can be set up again correctly.

If there is no admin and this is an organizational/partner account, contact Microsoft Support and request an MFA reset for that account, as described in the referenced guidance.
