A Microsoft file hosting and synchronization service.
After unlinking OneDrive, sign-in and sync issues are usually caused by account, configuration, or connectivity problems. Use these steps to get OneDrive working again:
- Confirm the account and password
- Open a browser and sign in to the Microsoft account dashboard to verify the username and password work: see step 1 under Can't sign in in the OneDrive issues article.
- If sign-in fails in the browser, use the Microsoft account sign-in helper linked from the OneDrive sign-in troubleshooting page.
- Check basic OneDrive sign-in
- If the OneDrive icon is gray or has a line through it, select it and complete the Set up OneDrive wizard by entering the email address and password.
- If this is a work or school account and sign-in fails, reset the password or contact the organization’s IT admin as described in Can't sign in to OneDrive.
- Re-link OneDrive properly (Windows) Since OneDrive was unlinked, re-linking is required:
- Select the OneDrive cloud icon in the notification area.
- Select Help & Settings > Settings.
- On the Account tab, if the PC is still listed, select Unlink this PC and confirm.
- Press Windows + R, enter:
%localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\settingsand select OK. - Delete the file PreSignInSettingsConfig.json to clear cached sign-in settings.
- Start OneDrive again (Windows key, type OneDrive, select the app) and sign in when prompted.
- When prompted that a OneDrive folder already exists, choose Use this folder (or Choose new folder if a different location is desired).
- If sign-in still fails with an error code
- For error 0x8004def7:
- Check OneDrive storage usage. If the storage limit is exceeded or nearly full, delete files or folders in OneDrive to free space.
- If storage is fine, unlink and re-link OneDrive again as above.
- If the issue persists, reset OneDrive using the steps in the Reset OneDrive article; this resets settings and forces a full resync.
- For errors 0x8004de80 or 0x8004de86:
- Unlink and re-link OneDrive to the correct account.
- If needed, uninstall OneDrive from Apps & features, then download and reinstall the latest OneDrive client and sign in again.
- If multiple accounts are involved, clear cached Office account identities as described under Clear out multiple identities.
- Check connectivity and firewall/VPN
- If OneDrive reports not being connected or cannot reach the service while the rest of the internet works:
- Make sure the latest version of OneDrive is installed.
- Temporarily disconnect from VPNs or security software that might block Microsoft 365 endpoints.
- If necessary, verify that the required URLs and ports for OneDrive are allowed, as described in the OneDrive issues article.
- If the OneDrive app still won’t connect
- Use the OneDrive sync troubleshooter linked from Fix OneDrive sync problems.
- If the problem persists across devices and networks after these steps, contact Microsoft support with the exact error code shown during sign-in.
