Microsoft 365 features that help users manage their subscriptions, account settings, and billing information.
These alerts are generated by the Microsoft 365 subscription and payment status that Office checks when it starts. Even if a support agent has confirmed that billing is up to date, Office can continue to show the banner if:
- The subscription was recently in an expired/suspended state and the local Office activation cache has not refreshed yet.
- Payment information was recently updated and the client has not pulled the latest status from the account.
To stop the alerts, use the same steps that are used for the "Account Notice" / billing-warning banners in Office:
- Confirm the subscription is active
- Close all Office apps.
- Go to the Subscriptions page at https://account.microsoft.com/services.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account used for Microsoft 365.
- Under Microsoft 365, verify that the subscription shows as active (not expired or past due). If it is expired, renew it following the guidance in the renewal article.
- Confirm payment information is clean
- Close all Office apps again.
- Go to the Payment options page at https://account.microsoft.com/billing/payments.
- Sign in with the same Microsoft account.
- If any payment method shows an error, update or replace it so there are no warnings on the page.
- After confirming both subscription and payment are in a healthy state, restart Word (and other Office apps). The client should refresh its license state and the “update payment” alert should stop appearing.
If the subscription and payment pages both show everything as active and error‑free but the alert continues after these steps, this matches the kind of transient issue described in community reports where the banner disappears after the license state refreshes (for example, after a restart). In that case, allow some time for the updated billing state to propagate and keep Office up to date; the alert should clear once the client receives the refreshed status.
