Weirdness with Battery 1 on Surface Book 3

My Surface Book 3 recently developed a weird problem. Battery 2 charges just fine,.but Battery 1 will no longer charge when connected to the keyboard (how I strongly prefer using it). Moreover it will only charge in one direction: that is it will charge disconnected (as tablet only) if the charger cable is pointing to the left, and not to the right (see photos) I've tried everything I can think of, really, because the tablet battery is smaller and dies quickly and it's a pain in the neck to work on it without a keyboard when that's not my preference. Any ideas? Thanks! PXL_20260521_183831508.jpgPXL_20260521_183818282.jpg

Battery 1 on Surface Book 3 is the tablet (clipboard) battery; Battery 2 is in the keyboard base. From the described behavior:

    • Battery 2 (base) charges normally.
    • Battery 1 (tablet) only charges when undocked and only with the Surface Connect cable in one orientation.

This points to a hardware issue either with the Surface Connect port on the tablet side or with the keyboard/base connection, not a software or driver problem.

Steps supported by the provided guidance:

    1. Check basics and connector orientation
      • Ensure the Surface power supply meets the Surface charging requirements.
      • Plug the Surface Connect connector in both directions and confirm the LED is solid white. If it only charges in one direction, that reinforces a physical connection issue.
      • Inspect and clean the connector: unplug from the wall, then clean the pins on the long, narrow part of the charger with a pencil eraser and rubbing alcohol as described under Clean the connector on your power supply.
    2. Check the battery icon status and drivers (while docked and undocked)
      • While connected as a tablet and while docked to the keyboard, check the battery icon in the taskbar for messages such as:
        • “Plugged in, not charging”
        • “Battery not detected”
      • If the icon shows “Plugged in, not charging” or similar for Battery 1, and this is not an Arm-based Surface, follow Solution 3: Remove the battery driver and install updates:
        1. Plug in Surface.
        2. Open Device Manager → expand Batteries.
        3. Uninstall Microsoft Surface ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery or Surface Battery.
        4. Use Action → Scan for hardware changes.
        5. Restart (Start → Power → Restart).
      • Also use the Surface appHelp & supportCheck for updates to ensure firmware and drivers are current.
    3. Force a restart
      • Shut down (Start → Power → Shut down), then press and hold the power button for 20 seconds until the logo appears again, as described under Force a restart. This can clear firmware/EC glitches affecting charging logic.
    4. If the issue persists, treat it as a hardware/service case
Because Battery 1 only charges in one connector orientation and not when docked, and Battery 2 works, this strongly indicates:
      • Wear/damage or poor contact on the Surface Connect port on the tablet, or
      • A fault in the tablet–keyboard connection path for power.
When cleaning, driver reinstall, and firmware updates do not restore normal charging in both orientations and while docked, the next supported step is to submit a service order:
      • Use How to get service or repair for Surface or the device page under If your Surface still won't charge, submit a service order to arrange inspection/repair.
      • If this is a business-owned device, follow Surface service options for Business and Education.

Given the symptoms and after performing the supported software and cleaning steps, ongoing inability for Battery 1 to charge when docked or in both orientations should be handled as a hardware repair scenario.

    Hi Hannah Trower,

I’m sorry to hear that you’re facing charging issues with your Surface, especially since the behavior seems to interfere with your reading/writing experience too. The AI answer already covered the core diagnosis steps, and from personal experience, I agree this strongly points to hardware rather than software.

Since your Surface Book 3 is likely out of standard warranty by now, it would be worth confirming whether the issue is with the charger or the Surface port so you can follow the most suitable path next:

    • If possible, try another Surface charger
    • Or try your current charger on another device.

Orientation sensitivity usually points to port wear, but if the issue does turn out to be with the cable, then you may only need to replace it, which would be a much simpler and less costly fix.
