A Microsoft app for iOS and Android devices that enables authentication with two-factor verification, phone sign-in, and code generation
For a Microsoft 365 family subscription, each family member’s Microsoft account is a personal account, not a tenant-admin scenario. Recovery depends on what security info (phone/email/Auth app) still works for each account.
Because the authentication code is required and the destination is unknown or inaccessible, use the Microsoft account security-info recovery paths:
- If the password is known and at least one security method still works for that family ID:
- Sign in to that account’s Advanced security options page. Sign in
- Select Add a new way to sign in or verify and add a new phone or email.
- When the code is sent to the new phone/email, enter it to confirm.
- Expand any old/unusable security info entries and select Remove so future codes go only to valid methods.
- If the password is known but all security info for that family ID is lost (no access to any phone/email listed):
- Start sign-in for that Microsoft account. Sign in
- At Verify your identity, select I don't have any of these.
- Follow the steps to replace the security info.
- After replacement, there is a mandatory 30‑day wait before normal sign-in is allowed. During those 30 days, if the old security info becomes available again, it can still be used to sign in, but doing so cancels the pending change.
- If the password is not known and there is no access to any security info:
- Review the guidance in Help with the Microsoft account recovery form.
- Submit the account recovery form for that Microsoft account. Recover account
These processes are per-account. They do not require knowing a “tenant ID” for a family subscription. Once each Microsoft account is recovered and security info is updated, OneDrive/Cloud data for that account becomes accessible again.
Note that support agents cannot bypass verification, send codes, or directly change account details; all recovery must go through the documented self-service flows.
