Microsoft 365 features that help users manage their subscriptions, account settings, and billing information.
The account will not automatically transition from a Personal subscription to a Family subscription just because an invitation was accepted. Access to Microsoft 365 Family depends on:
- The Family subscription being active and owned by someone else.
- The invitation being accepted correctly and the account being in the subscription owner’s family group.
Use the following steps to restore access and protect OneDrive data and apps:
- Confirm the Family subscription is active and shared
- The subscription owner should sign in to https://account.microsoft.com/services and open the Microsoft 365 Family subscription.
- Under Share subscription, they must verify:
- The subscription is Microsoft 365 Family (or Microsoft 365 Family or Premium) and is active.
- The account in question appears in the list of people they are sharing with and that the invitation is accepted, not pending.
- If needed, they should resend the invitation or stop sharing and share again.
- If they do not see Share subscription, they do not have a Family subscription and may need to switch between Microsoft 365 subscriptions.
- Ensure the invitation is accepted correctly
- Open the new invitation email and follow the link.
- When prompted, sign in with the same Microsoft account that previously had the Personal subscription and where the OneDrive data resides.
- Complete joining the family group if asked. Sharing only becomes active after the invitee joins the subscription owner’s family group; then the owner’s dashboard will show Start sharing and the share will be applied.
- Check subscription status on the account
- After accepting, sign in to https://account.microsoft.com/services with the same account.
- Verify that Microsoft 365 Family now appears under subscriptions. If it still does not appear, the invitation may not have been accepted with the correct account or the owner may not have completed sharing.
- Fix app “subscription expired” notices after renewal/sharing
- Close all Office apps (Word, Excel, etc.).
- Reopen an app and, if prompted, sign in with the account that now shows the Family subscription.
- This clears the “Subscription expired” banner once the Family subscription is correctly associated.
- Protect OneDrive data and syncing
- When a subscription expires or sharing stops, OneDrive files remain intact, but the extra 1 TB storage and full Office desktop app editing rights are lost until a valid subscription is active.
- As long as the account is successfully added to an active Family subscription, OneDrive storage and syncing continue under that account.
- If removed from the family group or if the Family subscription later expires, files remain, but:
- OneDrive storage reverts to its previous size.
- Desktop apps move to view/print-only; new editing/creation is blocked until a subscription is restored.
- If the Family subscription or sharing cannot be restored
- If the Family owner cannot share or the subscription is not visible, consider switching or renewing a subscription for the account directly using the guidance in Problems renewing a Microsoft 365 subscription.
These steps ensure the account is correctly attached to the Family subscription and that OneDrive data and Office apps continue working once sharing is properly configured.
