Managing personal Outlook.com account settings, security, and privacy
To sign in again, use the official self-service tools and avoid repeated attempts until each step completes, because too many failed sign-ins can trigger additional security blocks.
- Use the Outlook.com/Hotmail sign-in page
- Go to the Outlook.com sign-in page and try to sign in with the current Microsoft account password.
- If sign-in fails or asks for extra verification, do not keep retrying repeatedly, as this can cause the “too many times” lockout message.
- Run the Microsoft account/Outlook.com sign-in troubleshooter
- Use the dedicated troubleshooter for Outlook.com/Hotmail sign-in issues:
- From the Hotmail article: select Start troubleshooter:
https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=2158767. - From the Outlook.com article: select Open account troubleshooter:
https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=2158767.
- From the Hotmail article: select Start troubleshooter:
- Follow the prompts exactly; this tool is the supported path when normal sign-in fails.
- Use the dedicated troubleshooter for Outlook.com/Hotmail sign-in issues:
- If the account is blocked for unusual activity
- The account may be temporarily blocked because of repeated incorrect sign-ins or suspicious activity.
- Use the Unblock my Outlook.com account guidance referenced in the Hotmail/Outlook.com sign-in docs to complete the unblock process.
- If a 24‑hour or similar lockout is mentioned, wait the full period (and slightly longer) without any new sign-in attempts before trying again.
- Use the account recovery and security reset path
- If security info was removed and a 30‑day reset was started, wait until that 30‑day period fully completes before trying to rely on the new security info.
- After the waiting period, sign in again and then:
- Re-add working security methods (phone, alternate email, Microsoft Authenticator) under the account’s security settings.
- If sign-in is still blocked or still requires methods that no longer exist, use the account recovery form and follow it through to completion.
- Try alternative sign-in methods if available
- On the password page, if there is an option like Sign in another way, use it (for example, a different email, phone, or an app like Microsoft Authenticator) as suggested in similar Outlook.com cases.
- If already signed in on another device or browser, change sign-in preferences and update security info from there.
- If still locked out after waiting and recovery attempts
- If the same “too many times” or blocked behavior continues even after:
- Waiting the full lockout period (at least 24 hours for temporary lockouts, and the full 30 days for security info reset), and
- Using the sign-in troubleshooter and recovery options,
- Then the account is likely in a blocked or high‑risk state that only the automated systems can clear. Continue using the official tools:
- Start troubleshooter from the Hotmail sign-in article.
- Open account troubleshooter from the Outlook.com sign-in article.
- If the same “too many times” or blocked behavior continues even after:
- Getting additional help
- For more guided help with Outlook.com sign-in and account issues, use Get help with Outlook.com and the Outlook.com in-product Help entry, or the dedicated contact link for users who cannot sign in.
