A Microsoft app for iOS and Android devices that enables authentication with two-factor verification, phone sign-in, and code generation
To recover a Microsoft account without using the Microsoft Authenticator app, use alternative verification methods and the official recovery tools.
- Try other sign-in or verification methods
- If the account has other methods configured (text message, email, security key, etc.), choose those instead of the Authenticator app when prompted.
- If two-step verification is turned on, access to at least two recovery methods is required to sign in or recover the account.
- Remove the old Authenticator method (if access is still possible)
- If it is still possible to sign in (for example, via another method), go to the Microsoft account dashboard → Security → Advanced security options.
- Under Ways to prove who you are, find the entry that shows Send sign-in notification and the device name.
- Expand it and under App: Microsoft Outlook select Remove to remove that Authenticator-based method.
- Use the Sign-in Helper tool
- If the problem is signing in generally (password not working, username issues, verification problems), use the Sign-in Helper: it checks the account details and guides through the appropriate recovery steps.
- Go to the Sign-in Helper and enter the email address or phone number used for the account. Follow the instructions provided.
- Reset the password (if the issue is the password, not Authenticator)
- If the password is forgotten, use the password reset flow described in Reset your password from the Microsoft account help.
- If the password is known but stopped working, use the Sign-in Helper tool to diagnose and fix the issue.
- Use the Microsoft account recovery form (if no verification methods work)
- If none of the verification options (including Authenticator) can be used, fill out the Account recovery form.
- For best results, complete the form:
- On a device previously used to sign in to the account.
- From a usual location (home or office) where the account is commonly used.
- Provide as much accurate information as possible.
- The recovery form is available at the Account recovery form link in the Microsoft account recovery guidance.
- Important limitations with two-step verification
- If two-step verification is turned on and none of the alternate methods (phone, email, security key, etc.) are accessible, support cannot reset or bypass verification. This is by design to protect the account; support agents are not allowed to send password reset links or change account details in that situation.
- If the username or account is not recognized
- If the message “The Microsoft account you've entered does not exist” appears, double-check the spelling.
- If it is correct, follow the guidance in My username and password have stopped working via the linked article from the recovery-form help.
These steps allow recovery of a Microsoft account without using the Authenticator app, as long as at least one other verification method or sufficient recovery information is available.
