Yet another Windows issue (of which there are always many). My microphone has started muting itself in Windows. Why? Especially during Whatsapp calls.

Automatic microphone muting in Windows is usually caused by one of three things: privacy settings, app-level control, or driver/device issues. For WhatsApp calls on Windows 11, use this checklist:

  1. Check microphone privacy settings
  • Select Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone.
  • Under Allow access to the microphone on this device, select Change and make sure the toggle is On.
  • Ensure Allow apps to access your microphone is On.
  • In Choose which Microsoft Store apps can access your microphone, make sure any calling/voice apps in use are allowed.

If microphone access is off or restricted, Windows or apps may appear to “mute” the mic during calls.

  1. Confirm the correct input device and test it
  • Select Start > Settings > System > Sound.
  • Under Input, make sure the intended microphone (headset or internal mic) is selected in Choose your input device.
  • Use Test your microphone (Windows 10/11) and speak; verify the level bar moves. If it drops to zero or stops responding during a call, another app or driver is interfering.
  1. Check mic level and boost If the mic seems muted because volume is extremely low:
  • Windows 10: Start > Settings > System > Sound.
    • Under Input, select the mic > Device properties.
    • On the Levels tab, raise Microphone and Microphone Boost, then select OK.
    • Speak and verify Test your microphone shows activity.
  • Windows 11: Start > Settings > System > Sound.
    • Under Input, select the mic.
    • Under Input settings, select Start test, speak, then Stop test and adjust Input volume if needed.
  1. Verify the device is not muted on hardware
  • If using a headset, ensure any physical Mute button or inline control is not active.
  • On some laptops/keyboards, a dedicated mic mute key or function key can toggle the mic off at the hardware level.
  1. Reinstall or update audio drivers (if the mic keeps cutting out or disappearing) If Windows intermittently “loses” the mic or it stops working after a call:
  2. Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
  4. Right-click the audio device and select Uninstall device.
    • Check Delete the driver software for this device (if shown), then select Uninstall.
    • Repeat for other problematic audio devices.
  5. Restart the PC so Windows reinstalls audio devices automatically.
  6. Back in Device Manager, expand Sound, video and game controllers, right-click the audio driver, and select Update driver.
  7. Run the Recording Audio troubleshooter
  • Go to Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters.
  • Run the Recording Audio troubleshooter and apply any fixes it suggests.
  1. App-specific behavior (WhatsApp and similar apps) Some calling apps can control the microphone level or mute state internally. If the mic only mutes during WhatsApp calls:
  • Open WhatsApp’s audio/voice settings and ensure it is using the correct microphone.
  • Make sure no other communication app (Teams, Zoom, etc.) is running in the background and taking exclusive control of the mic.

If, after these steps, the microphone still mutes itself only during WhatsApp calls while working normally elsewhere, the issue is likely specific to the app rather than Windows, and updating or reinstalling that app would be the next step.
