Microsoft 365 features that help users manage their subscriptions, account settings, and billing information.
Follow these steps to start using Word and Excel on the new laptop immediately:
- Confirm the correct subscription
- Go to the Microsoft account Services page: https://account.microsoft.com/services/
- Sign in with the same personal Microsoft account that owns the Microsoft 365 Family subscription (or the new Microsoft 365 subscription just purchased).
- Verify that:
- The subscription (Family/Personal) is listed.
- The status is active and the expiration date is in the future.
- Make sure the plan actually includes desktop apps
- Microsoft 365 Family and Personal include full desktop Word and Excel.
- Microsoft 365 Basic does not include desktop apps; it only gives OneDrive storage and web/mobile apps. If the new subscription is Basic, Word and Excel on the desktop will not activate; use the web versions instead or upgrade to Personal/Family.
- Install Office on the new laptop from the account portal
- On the same Services page (or from https://www.office.com after signing in with the correct account):
- Sign in with the account that has the active Family/Personal subscription.
- Select Install next to the Microsoft 365 subscription.
- Run the installer that downloads and complete setup.
- This ensures the apps are tied to the correct subscription and can be used immediately after installation.
- On the same Services page (or from https://www.office.com after signing in with the correct account):
- Fix “subscription canceled” or “wait” messages in Word/Excel
- Open Word or Excel on the laptop.
- Go to File → Account.
- Under User Information, sign out of all accounts.
- Close Word/Excel.
- Reopen Word/Excel, go again to File → Account, select Sign in and use the same Microsoft account that shows the active subscription in step 1.
- If there is an Update license or Activate button, select it and complete sign-in.
- If desktop apps still do not work
- If the subscription is Basic, desktop apps will not activate; use the web apps instead:
- Go to https://www.office.com, sign in, and open Word for the web or Excel for the web.
- If the subscription is Family/Personal and still shows issues after the steps above, contact Microsoft Support from the subscription page to check the account and activation status.
- If the subscription is Basic, desktop apps will not activate; use the web apps instead:
In the meantime, Word and Excel can always be used in a browser for free at Office.com, as long as there is a Microsoft account.
