A Microsoft app for iOS and Android devices that enables authentication with two-factor verification, phone sign-in, and code generation
On Android, the most common cause of a vague backup error is that the account is not actually signed in for backup.
To create a cloud backup on Android:
- Open Microsoft Authenticator.
- Tap the menu icon, then Settings.
- Under Backup, turn on the Cloud Backup toggle.
- When prompted, select Continue or Change account and sign in with a Microsoft personal account to store the backup.
If the app shows a generic error like “Cannot create cloud backup,” treat it the same as the documented “Something went wrong” error: it indicates that backup cannot be created because the backup account sign‑in is not complete or valid. Ensure:
- A Microsoft personal account is selected as the backup account.
- The sign‑in flow is completed (no cancelled or half‑finished login).
- If the wrong account was used previously, delete that backup and configure backup again:
- In Settings, under Backup, turn off Cloud Backup and confirm deletion.
- Turn Cloud Backup back on and choose Continue or Change account to sign in with the correct Microsoft personal account.
On iOS, backup uses iCloud instead of the Android cloud backup service. To avoid backup errors there, make sure:
- iCloud Drive, iCloud Keychain, and iCloud Backup are enabled on the device.
- In the iOS Saved to iCloud list, the Authenticator toggle is turned on.
- Authenticator is updated to version 6.8.33 or later and opened at least once before trying to back up.
The message is vague because the app surfaces a generic failure when the backup preconditions (such as being signed in to a backup account or having the required platform backup services enabled) are not met, rather than exposing detailed internal error codes.
