Follow these steps to reduce freezing and improve OneNote stability on iPad mini:
- Update iPadOS and OneNote
- Install the latest iPadOS update (recent issues have been resolved by OS updates in similar cases).
- Update OneNote and any other Office apps (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) from the App Store so they all use the latest shared Office identity.
- Clear OneNote sign-in credentials (in case of corrupted Office identity) Sometimes corrupted credentials can cause instability in OneNote.
- Open iOS Settings.
- Scroll to OneNote.
- Tap Reset OneNote.
- Turn on Delete Sign-In Credentials.
- Make sure OneNote is not running (swipe up from the bottom, find OneNote, swipe it up to close).
- Reopen OneNote and sign in again.
- Reduce notebook size and load Large or very busy notebooks can slow down or freeze the app, especially when opening or creating new pages.
- Reduce the number of sections in large notebooks.
- Reduce the number of pages in very large sections.
- Reduce the amount of content on individual pages (especially large images, embedded files, or long histories).
- Close notebooks that are not needed:
- In OneNote for iOS, tap the Show Notebooks button until the Notebooks list appears.
- Tap and hold the notebook name.
- Tap the Close Notebook icon at the bottom-left.
- Exit and restart OneNote.
- Check device storage and free space Low storage can worsen performance and freezing.
- Go to Settings > General > iPad Storage.
- Wait for storage usage to calculate.
- Scroll to OneNote to see how much space it uses.
- If storage is nearly full:
- Close unused notebooks in OneNote.
- Use Review Large Attachments and Review Personal Videos in iPad Storage to remove large items.
- Delete unnecessary apps or content.
- Allow initial sync to complete If a new or large notebook/page is still syncing, interaction can feel frozen.
- After opening OneNote or a newly created page, wait for all notebooks to finish syncing before heavy use.
If freezing continues after these steps, capture details (whether it happens only on specific large notebooks or pages) and provide them when contacting Microsoft support.
