Unable to sign in to Microsoft Authenticator

Hi, I recently changed my microsoft account password and I tried relogging in on my Authenticator app, then I keep getting the "Something went wrong" error message.

It is important that I be able to back up my authenticator app because I plan on changing my phone soon. Is there any way to fix this? I already sent the log via the support tab in the app, but no response so far.

The "Something went wrong" message when trying to back up or sign in for backup in Microsoft Authenticator usually means the app is not signed in to a Microsoft personal account for backup.

To fix this and enable backup (so the accounts can be restored on a new phone):

    1. Open the Microsoft Authenticator app on the current phone.
    2. Go to Settings (tap the menu icon, then Settings).
    3. Under Backup:
      • On Android: Turn on Cloud Backup.
      • On iOS: Turn on iCloud backup.
    4. When prompted, select Continue or Change account and sign in with a personal Microsoft account that will act as the recovery account.
    5. After signing in successfully, the backup will be created to that account (and to iCloud on iOS).

If the wrong backup account was used earlier, delete and recreate the backup:

    1. In Authenticator, go to Settings.
    2. Under Backup, turn Cloud Backup (or iCloud backup) off and confirm to delete the backup.
    3. Turn it back on, then choose Continue or Change account and sign in with the correct Microsoft personal account.

Once backup is enabled and completes, the accounts can be restored on another device of the same platform type (iOS → iOS, Android → Android). Cross‑platform restore (iOS to Android or Android to iOS) is not supported.

If the "Something went wrong" message continues to appear, ensure that the sign-in step under Backup is completed; without being signed in, backup cannot be created.
