My iphone will not let me into my mail app

I was logged into the Mail app on my iPhone as normal with my Outlook account, and then it suddenly said I needed to re-enter my password. I did that, but it told me the password was wrong, so I clicked “Forgot Password.”

It then tried to make me recover the account using an old email address that I no longer have access to. After that, I went through the account recovery form and used a Gmail account so I could receive codes and responses. I have submitted the form multiple times, and it says I will receive an answer within 24 hours about whether my account can be recovered, but I never receive any response or code to my Gmail account.

I asked ChatGPT for advice and removed the account from the Mail app on my phone, so now I can’t access my emails on my iPhone at all. I have no idea how to get my account back when it randomly stopped letting me in. I am only able to raise this ticket as i am logged in to emails on my laptop.

Follow these steps to restore access on the iPhone Mail app and to the Outlook account:

    1. Verify the Outlook/Microsoft account password
    • On a working device (laptop where sign-in still works), go to the Microsoft account sign-in page (for example, outlook.com) in a browser.
    • Confirm that the current password works there.
    • If sign-in fails or seems inconsistent, use the official sign-in helper tool for Microsoft personal accounts: it checks the account and guides through recovery or fixes if a problem is detected. Use the Start link from the “Can’t sign in to the Outlook mobile app” article.
    1. Reset the password correctly (if needed)
    • If the password was changed or recovery was attempted, ensure the current password is known and working in a browser first.
    • For Microsoft personal accounts, password changes and recovery must be completed via the web; the Mail app cannot change the password itself.
    • After a successful password reset, sign in to the account in a browser and confirm access to the inbox.
    1. Fix sign-in on the iPhone Mail app If the account was removed from the iPhone Mail app:
    • On the iPhone, go to Settings > Mail > Accounts.
    • Tap Add Account.
    • Choose Outlook.com (for Outlook.com/Hotmail/Live accounts).
    • Sign in with the same Microsoft account and the confirmed working password.
    • Complete any two-step verification or security prompts.

If the account was already added but keeps prompting for a password or fails to connect, remove and re-add it as Outlook.com:

    1. Remove the account from Apple Mail
      • Go to Settings > Mail > Accounts.
      • Tap the Outlook/Hotmail account.
      • Tap Delete Account.
    2. Add the account back as Outlook.com
      • Go to Settings > Mail.
      • Tap Accounts > Add Account.
      • Select Outlook.com.
      • Sign in and complete the Outlook.com sign-in flow.

If removing and re-adding still fails with password or connection errors, follow the additional Apple Mail steps from the basic-authentication guidance:

    1. Remove the Outlook account again from Settings > Mail > Accounts.
    2. Go to Settings > Safari > Clear History and Website Data.
    3. Reboot the iPhone.
    4. Add the account back under Settings > Mail > Accounts > Add Account > Outlook.com, then sign in.
    5. If the primary alias was changed recently If the Outlook.com account’s primary alias (email address) was changed, and sign-in issues started afterward, there is a known issue where sign-in can fail on Outlook for iOS:
    • In the Outlook mobile app (if used instead of Apple Mail):
      • Go to Settings.
      • Select the affected account.
      • Select Delete Account.
      • Re-add the account so the correct settings and alias are imported.
    1. If recovery emails are not arriving
    • Ensure the Gmail address used for recovery is accessible and that spam/junk folders are checked.
    • Because password changes and recovery for Microsoft accounts are controlled centrally, if recovery emails are not received and 2FA or recovery info is outdated, direct support may be required.
    • Use Outlook.com or Microsoft account support entry points (for example, via Help in Outlook.com) from a device where sign-in still works to contact support and indicate that recovery messages are not arriving.
    1. When Outlook mobile detects a password change
    • After changing the password via the web, Outlook mobile (including Outlook for iOS) will detect the change and prompt to sign in again with the new password.
    • If the app does not update properly, deleting and re-adding the account in the app is a supported way to force it to use the new credentials.

These steps ensure the Microsoft account is working in a browser first, then re-establish a clean, modern-authenticated connection from the iPhone Mail app or Outlook for iOS.
