Cannot log in to Outlook on Android device

I just got a new Android phone (Google Pixel). I cannot log in to Outlook (or probably not any MSN app I assume) because when it sends a verification code to my backup email (which is a gmail account) the message never come through.

1. When I access my MSN account on my desktop and it requires the exact same verification via my backup email it always comes through so it is not an issue with gmail blocking messages from MSN.
2. My old phone always logged me right into Outlook automatically because the password was saved. Obviously when I transferred everyting to the new phone the login credentials for Outlook did not come over.
3. I even went in and changed my MSN password (it was overdue) with the hope that might fix something but I still am being required to provide the code sent to my gmail account and it is still never coming through.
4. I discovered I have this same issue on an Android tablet which I never use for email but tried just out of curiosity.

I am at my wits end because I would really like to be able to check Outlook on my phone like I did before. I am out of ideas as to what is causing this problem. An Android issue??? I don't know. I am not real tech savvy either.
