A Microsoft app for iOS and Android devices that enables authentication with two-factor verification, phone sign-in, and code generation
This situation means the authenticator (broker) app did not complete the sign-in, so the login must be finished directly in that app or with help from an admin/support team.
Use these steps depending on the type of account:
- Work or school account (managed by an organization)
- Open the Microsoft Authenticator, Company Portal, or the primary Microsoft app on the device.
- Complete the pending sign-in request there (approve the request or enter the number shown on the sign-in screen).
- If the app shows “Authentication did not complete,” check the following:
- Make sure the Authenticator app is unlocked.
- Ensure notifications are enabled and not silent.
- Update to the latest version of Microsoft Authenticator.
- Confirm the device has a working internet connection and correct date/time.
- If still unable to complete sign-in and this is a work/school account, contact the IT admin. The admin can:
- Require a re-register MFA for the user so new methods can be set up, or
- Work with Microsoft support/Data Protection if the only admin is locked out.
- Microsoft account (personal)
- If the authenticator loop prevents sign-in, use another verification method if available (email, SMS, or backup authenticator) when selecting “Other ways to sign in” or similar options.
- If no method works and the password is forgotten or cannot be used, reset the password using the official Reset your password flow: Reset your password.
If none of the above options are available and this is a business/education tenant where the only admin is locked out, the issue must be escalated via Microsoft support (Data Protection team) through the official support channels so they can verify identity and restore access.
