Hi, For the last couple of days i am only able to use my password once to access my microsoft account(s) it will then not accept my password / tell me the password is incorrect. When i try to re-set the password, the verification codes are not coming through to my phone (i did change my phone yesterday) I have also been logged out of the authenticator app and because it won't accept my password or text me a code, i am just in a constant circle of events. At this stage i'm considering giving up and setting up a totally new account although this would be a massive hindrance as i would have to update so many accounts with my new email address. Unless anyone has any suggestions/resolutions for this?

The behavior described matches a temporary security block plus verification issues. Use these steps in order and avoid repeated attempts, which can extend the block.

    1. Stop repeated sign-in and reset attempts
    • Multiple failed sign-ins, password resets, and code requests can trigger a temporary block or “Try another verification method” behavior.
    • Wait at least 24 hours with no further attempts before trying again. If the issue persists, wait longer (up to a week) before more attempts.
    1. Try a different verification method
    • If SMS codes are not arriving, use any other method on the account (alternate email, another phone number, or a different authenticator method) if available.
    • When prompted, choose an alternate method instead of resending codes repeatedly.
    1. Fix SMS / phone verification issues If codes are not coming to the new phone number:
    • Ensure the number is not VOIP; VOIP numbers cannot receive Microsoft verification codes.
    • Check the phone’s SMS settings and unblock texts from unknown numbers.
    • Make sure the SMS inbox is not full and the messaging app is working correctly.
    • If in a region where Microsoft SMS is limited or delayed, wait and try again later.
    • Avoid excessive code requests; this can cause Microsoft to stop sending codes temporarily.
    1. Confirm security info is correct (when access is possible) Once able to sign in on any device:
    2. Go to the Security info page with the work or school account and select Update info.
    3. Verify that the phone number and email are correct.
    4. Add at least one additional method (for example, an alternate email) so that loss of phone or Authenticator does not lock out the account again.
    5. Handle “Try another verification method” / account block If seeing a “Try another verification method” message or similar block:
    • Reason can be unusual activity, high volume of requests, or suspicious traffic from the network/location.
    • To resolve:
      1. Try another method: switch from SMS to email, or vice versa, if configured.
      2. Try another network: switch between Wi‑Fi and mobile data, or use a different Wi‑Fi network.
      3. Wait: do not keep retrying; wait at least 24 hours before trying again.
      4. If still blocked, use the sign-in helper troubleshooter: Start.
    1. If the password truly stops working If the correct password is no longer accepted after a short time:
    • Use the official recovery flow: Recover your account.
    • Follow the steps to receive a security code, verify identity, and set a new password.
    • Ensure the correct account alias and domain are used (for example, .com vs .co.uk) and that the email name is typed correctly.

If none of the above works after waiting out the lockout period and using different methods/networks, the remaining path is to continue using the automated recovery and sign-in helper tools, as manual overrides by support are not available for most consumer accounts.
