A Microsoft app for iOS and Android devices that enables authentication with two-factor verification, phone sign-in, and code generation
To get back into the Microsoft 365 account when Microsoft Authenticator is blocking sign-in, follow the path that matches the situation.
- If this is a personal Microsoft account (Outlook.com, Hotmail, Xbox, etc.) and the problem is verification codes
- If the issue is that verification codes are not arriving or not working, use the dedicated troubleshooting steps for verification codes:
- If the password is forgotten, reset it here:
- If the username (email used to sign in) is in doubt, look it up using:
- If this is a work or school (business/education) account and Authenticator is the only MFA method
- If there is another admin in the organization:
- Ask that admin to sign in to the Microsoft Entra admin center.
- Go to Users → All users, select the locked-out user.
- Open Authentication methods and select Require re-register multifactor authentication.
- Next sign-in will prompt to set up Authenticator (and other methods) again.
- If there is no other admin and this is the only admin account:
- Contact Microsoft Support by phone and ask to be routed to the Data Protection team so they can verify identity and reset MFA for the tenant. Use the country-specific Customer service phone numbers - Microsoft Support entry and follow the automated prompts indicating the issue is with Authenticator and Office 365 for business, and that this is a company account with no other admin.
- If there is another admin in the organization:
- If all security info is lost (no Authenticator, no SMS, no alternate email) and the account is a personal Microsoft account
- Use the Microsoft account recovery form:
- Review guidance: Help with the Microsoft account recovery form.
- Submit the recovery request via the form: Recover account.
- If the recovery succeeds, follow the prompts to update security info and add multiple methods (Authenticator, SMS, alternate email) so a single method failure does not lock out access again.
- Use the Microsoft account recovery form:
- If the password is known but sign-in still fails or the username is “not recognized”
- Use the Microsoft account sign-in helper to diagnose and fix common sign-in issues when the password is known but not working:
- If the username or password has “stopped working,” see:
- If the account is fully locked and verification codes never work
- Try the password reset or verification steps in a different browser, InPrivate/Incognito mode, and on a different network (for example, mobile data instead of home Wi‑Fi).
- If still blocked, complete the recovery form at https://account.live.com/acsr using the guidance in Help with the Microsoft account recovery form.
- If needed, sign in with any other Microsoft account (or create a new one) and contact support via the Contact Support flow described in the recovery-form guidance so an agent can assist with the recovery process.
Once access is restored, add multiple security methods (Authenticator, SMS, alternate email) and avoid removing all methods at once to prevent future lockouts.
