The issue appears to be a software glitch in the recent Kindle .exe installer, and it affects Windows 11 ARM edition specifically — which is what the Surface Pro 11 runs. Amazon's Kindle support has confirmed they are aware of the problem and are working on a fix.

Use Kindle Cloud Reader temporarily until Amazon fixes the ARM app.

    Hello Gregory Ireland,

A couple of quick details would help narrow this down, since there are a few different things going on with Kindle for PC right now:

    • Exact Surface model — when you say "Surface 11," do you mean a Surface Pro 11 (the 2024 Snapdragon X / ARM model) or a Surface Laptop 7?
    • Kindle app version — open Kindle > Help > About Kindle and grab the version number. If it won't open at all, check Settings > Apps > Installed apps and look for "Kindle."
    • What exactly happens on launch — does nothing appear at all (silent fail), does it flash and close, or does it open and then error? Any message?
    • Which "old .exe" did you try, and where did you get it from?

Also worth noted that Amazon has announced that the classic Kindle for PC app will be retired on June 30, 2026, and a new Kindle app for Windows 11 is rolling out via the Microsoft Store as the replacement. So depending on what's going on, the cleanest fix may simply be moving to the new Store app rather than chasing the old one.

Once you share the above, I can point you to the right path.
