Managing personal Outlook.com account settings, security, and privacy
The behavior is typically caused by a conflict between the current primary alias and an existing work or school account, or by limitations on which addresses can be used as a primary alias.
Use these supported patterns to resolve it:
- Check for work/school conflict (ADDriverStoreAccessNonLocalException scenario)
- If the primary alias (or the one being promoted) matches an existing Microsoft 365/Azure AD work or school account, Outlook.com can block the change.
- In that case, change the Microsoft account to use a different personal alias that does not exist as a work/school account:
- Go to the Your Info page.
- Select Manage how you sign in to Microsoft.
- Under Account aliases:
- If only the work/school address is listed, add a personal address (for example an Outlook.com address) as an alias and select Add alias.
- When the personal address appears, select Make primary next to it.
- After it becomes the primary alias, select Remove next to the work/school address if it is listed there.
- Use a different alias as primary If there is already more than one alias and one of them is not tied to a work/school account:
- Sign in to the Microsoft account website.
- Select Your info > Manage how you sign in to Microsoft.
- Under Account aliases, select Make primary next to another alias that is:
- Not used as a work or school account, and
- Allowed as a primary alias (not blocked by policy).
- Add a new alias and promote it If the existing aliases fail when set as primary, add a fresh personal alias and then make it primary:
- In Manage how you sign in to Microsoft, select Add email.
- Either:
- Use an email address already owned that is not associated with any other Microsoft account, or
- Create a new Outlook.com address.
- Complete verification.
- Back on the alias list, select Make primary next to this new alias.
Notes and limitations from the service behavior
- An alias cannot be added if it is already associated with another Microsoft account.
- Existing @hotmail.com, @live.com, @outlook.com, and @msn.com addresses cannot be added as aliases if they already belong to another account.
- The primary alias cannot be changed to an email address that is associated with a work or school account.
If every attempt to promote a non‑work/non‑school alias fails, the account is likely affected by the work/school conflict described above; resolving that by moving the Microsoft account to a unique personal alias (step 1 or 3) is the supported path.
