Account locked – SMS verification method not working

Hello,

My locked Microsoft account is: ******@hotmail.com

I am unable to sign in to my Microsoft Outlook account. I receive an SMS verification code, but after entering the code, I get the error message: “this method is currently not available”.

My phone number is up to date and I do receive the verification code, but the system does not allow me to complete the sign-in process. This issue has been ongoing for a few days and I still get the same error even when trying at different times.

I have also tried the account recovery form, but I was unable to regain access to my account.

Additionally, I do not see my recovery email as a verification option — only my phone number is available. I have also tried signing in from different devices, browsers, and networks, but the issue still persists.

I understand that repeated SMS attempts may cause temporary blocks, and I have followed the recommended steps, but the problem continues.

I kindly request assistance to unlock my account or reset my verification methods.

Thank you.

The error “this method is currently not available” after entering a valid SMS code usually indicates a temporary block or issue with that verification method, even though the code is received.

    To proceed, follow these steps:

    1. Try another verification method
      • If any alternate methods are configured (backup email, Microsoft Authenticator, other phone number), choose one of those instead of SMS when prompted.
      • This is explicitly recommended when a specific method is blocked or failing.
    2. Avoid repeated SMS attempts
      • Excessive or repetitive verification requests to the same phone number can cause temporary or even longer blocks on that method.
      • Stop retrying frequently; wait at least 24 hours before trying SMS again, and up to a week if the issue persists.
    3. Switch network or device
      • Try the sign-in and verification from a different network (for example, switch between Wi‑Fi and mobile data, or use another Wi‑Fi network).
      • If possible, try from another device and a different browser, preferably in InPrivate/Incognito mode.
    4. Check for account blocks or unusual activity
      • The account may be temporarily blocked due to unusual activity, high volume of verification requests, or suspicious traffic from the region. In these cases, verification methods can fail even when codes arrive.
      • These blocks are often automatically lifted after some time; avoid repeated sign-in attempts that can extend the lockout.
    5. Use the sign-in helper
      • Run the Microsoft sign-in helper to diagnose the sign-in issue and see available recovery options: use the Sign-in helper link provided in the documentation.
    6. If still blocked and no method works
      • If no verification method succeeds and the account remains locked, wait and then retry with an alternate method if available.
      • If sign-in is still not possible after waiting and using the helper, contact Microsoft Support using any other account (personal or newly created) and describe that SMS verification returns “this method is currently not available” for a locked account. Support agents cannot send codes or change security info, but can guide through supported recovery paths.

Note: Support and forum moderators cannot directly unlock accounts, send verification codes, or change security details. Recovery must go through the automated verification and sign-in tools, plus waiting out any temporary blocks.
