Follow these steps to get back into the account when Microsoft Authenticator is not sending a code and no other method can be chosen:

    1. Check for common Authenticator issues
      • Make sure the Microsoft Authenticator app is unlocked on the device; if it is locked, the entry box or prompt may not appear.
      • Ensure notifications are enabled for Microsoft Authenticator and not set to silent. If SMS codes are configured, check text messages in case a code arrived silently.
      • Confirm the app is up to date by installing the latest version from the store.
      • Verify the device has a working internet connection; if needed, switch between Wi‑Fi and mobile data.
      • Ensure the device date and time are correct.
    2. Try using Outlook mobile as an authenticator (work/school accounts) If this is a Microsoft work or school account and the organization allows Outlook-based authentication, Outlook mobile can be used instead of Authenticator:
      1. Install or update Microsoft Outlook on the phone (Android version 4.2405.0+ or iOS version 4.2438.0+).
      2. Sign in to Outlook with the work or school account.
      3. After setup, Outlook will show a confirmation that sign-in requests will be received on the device.
      4. When signing in elsewhere, a notification should appear in Outlook; select Approve (and, if prompted, tap the matching number) to complete sign-in.
    3. Use Outlook mobile to get a one-time sign-in code (if enabled) If the sign-in page offers Use a code and Outlook is configured for that account:
      1. Open the Outlook app and tap the Home icon (top left).
      2. Tap the Settings gear (bottom left).
      3. Under General, tap Accounts, then select the account.
      4. Tap Sign-in requests.
        • If Microsoft Authenticator is installed and required, an error may appear saying Authenticator must be used.
      5. Tap to copy the displayed code.
        • Codes refresh every 30 seconds; if the timer is almost expired, wait for a new code.
      6. Return to the sign-in page and paste or enter the code.
    4. If no alternative method works
      • For personal accounts (Outlook.com, Hotmail, etc.), use the account recovery and password reset options provided on the sign-in page.
      • For work or school accounts, contact the organization’s IT administrator and ask them to reset multifactor authentication (MFA) or enable another method (such as SMS or email) so a new sign-in method can be configured.
