How to register a new device from in microsoft

1. Are you trying to register a new device with the Microsoft Authenticator app installed within this page here: https://mysignins.microsoft.com/security-info?
2. What error message are you getting when you try and add the Authentication method?
3. Did you ever sign into the Authenticator app?
4. Are you an administrator?
5. Are there other administrators for your org?

Please be aware that if you do not have any other authentication methods on the account security page, please do not try and remove the previous one. Otherwise, you will lock your account out.

It sounds like you’re trying to swap out your old Microsoft Authenticator device for a new one, but the Security info portal won’t let you delete the previous registration—usually because it’s your only MFA method and the system is trying to prevent you from locking yourself out. Here’s a straightforward way to get your new device registered:

What to do

Sign in using an alternate MFA method • On the Two-factor verification page, choose “Sign in another way” and pick SMS, phone call, or email—anything you have registered besides Authenticator. • This ensures you don’t lose access when you delete the old device.

Go to the Security info page • Browse to https://aka.ms/setupsecurityinfo (or https://mysignins.microsoft.com/security-info). • Authenticate with your alternate method.

Add your new Authenticator app • Click “+ Add sign-in method” and select “Authenticator app.” • Follow the wizard: open Microsoft Authenticator on your new device, tap “Add account” → “Work or school account,” and scan the QR code.

(Optional) Make the new device your default method • Under Security info, click the three-dot menu next to your new Authenticator entry and choose “Change default.”

Remove the old Authenticator registration • Back on Security info, click the three-dot menu next to the old device entry and choose “Delete.”

Verify it works • Sign out and back in, pick “Microsoft Authenticator” as your MFA method, and approve the push/send code on your new device.

If you don’t have any alternate method to sign in…

• You’ll need a Global Admin or Authentication Administrator to set “Require re-register multifactor authentication” on your user object. – In the Azure portal, go to Azure Active Directory → Users → (select you) → Authentication methods → Require re-register multifactor authentication. – That forces the next sign-in to prompt you to register a new MFA device.

• If you’re the only Global Admin and you’ve locked yourself out, another Global Admin must do this for you—or you’ll need to raise a support request so Microsoft can reset your MFA methods.
