Recover personal account

For reasons I am still unsure about, I have been locked out of my personal hotmail account.

The last email I sent from that account was a business one. I am logging in and writing this from my business account to prove I am legit and get my personal one unlocked. The other questions are so opaque and require such a level of detail that no real person could ever recall the required information.

I think this should prove I am the same person however, and get my password reset/account unlocked. I am clearly personally liked to the organisation I am emailing. I just need a human, or even a chat bot, to engage with me and index the two things. But I cannot seem to access any help. If I can't get help and unlock my account, this is going to cause a lot of unnecessary disruption and chaos in my life, that could be avoided with a 30 second check.

I going through these processes from the same devices I always use, in the same place. It is quite obviously me.

Any help would be appreciated.

For a locked personal Hotmail/Outlook.com account, only the automated recovery and security flows can be used; support agents and forums cannot manually unlock or “link” a business and personal account, even if both clearly belong to the same person.

    Use these steps, in order:

    1. Use the Sign-in Helper first
    1. If the account is locked and “Next” is missing
    • If, when signing in, there is no Next button, the account is locked due to suspicious activity or a Terms of Use violation.
    • In that case, select the link in the sign-in window that begins with aka.ms/ and follow the instructions. A Microsoft Online Safety agent will review the reinstatement request and contact via email.
    • Do not submit multiple reinstatement forms; this can slow down the response.
    1. Use the Microsoft account recovery form (if needed) If the sign-in helper or standard reset path does not work:
    • Ensure access to a working email account (can be any account, including a friend’s or a new temporary Outlook.com account) to receive updates about the request.
    • From a device and location commonly used with the locked account (same PC/phone, same home/office network), open the Account recovery form: https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=2288285
    • Before filling it out, gather as much information as possible about how the account has been used:
      • Old passwords that might have been used.
      • Subject lines of emails sent from that Hotmail account (especially to frequent contacts). Subject lines must be exact.
      • Email addresses of contacts recently emailed.
      • Any Microsoft services tied to the account (Skype ID and contacts, Xbox console hardware ID, etc.).
    • Answer every question with as much detail as possible. Guessing is allowed; wrong answers do not count against the request.
    • Microsoft will review the form and typically respond within 24 hours to the working email address provided.
    1. If recovery attempts are rate-limited or locked
    • If there have been too many attempts (codes or forms), wait for the lockout period (often about 24 hours) to expire before trying again. Continuing to attempt sign-in or recovery can extend the cooldown.
    • When retrying, use InPrivate browsing or a different browser, and if possible a different network (for example, mobile hotspot vs. home Wi‑Fi), as suggested in similar cases.
    1. Important limitations
    • If two-step verification was turned on and none of the verification methods (phone, email, app) are accessible, support agents are not allowed to send password reset links or change account details. In that case, only successful completion of the automated recovery flow can restore access.
    • Public forums (including Microsoft Q&A) and moderators cannot escalate or override the automated account recovery decisions.

Because of these security rules, proving identity via a business account or explaining the situation in detail to a human is not sufficient to bypass the automated checks. The best chance of regaining access is to:

    • Wait out any temporary lockouts.
    • Use the Sign-in Helper and, if needed, the Account recovery form from a familiar device/location.
    • Provide the most complete and precise information possible about past usage of the locked account.
