A Microsoft app for iOS and Android devices that enables authentication with two-factor verification, phone sign-in, and code generation
Number matching and verification codes are different mechanisms. In this scenario, the account is successfully added to Microsoft Authenticator and time-based codes are visible, but Edge is specifically asking for number matching approval.
If number matching is not appearing in Authenticator, use one of these supported verification methods instead:
- Use a different verification method already configured
- When prompted in Edge, choose an alternative method such as:
- SMS text code to a mobile phone (not a VOIP number).
- Email verification code sent to a configured security email address.
- Ensure the phone number or email is correct and accessible:
- For personal Microsoft accounts, sign in to the Security basics page and select Update info to confirm or change security info.
- For work or school accounts, sign in to the Security info page and select Update info.
- When prompted in Edge, choose an alternative method such as:
- Check that verification messages are being delivered
- If using SMS:
- Make sure the phone does not block texts from unknown numbers.
- Confirm the inbox is not full and the messaging app is working.
- Ensure the number on the account is a mobile number, not VOIP.
- If using email:
- Check the junk/spam folder for messages from @accountprotection.microsoft.com and mark as trusted.
- Verify that the email being checked is the primary alias or a configured security email.
- If using SMS:
- Avoid repeated requests
- Do not repeatedly request codes or approvals; excessive or repetitive requests can cause temporary blocking of verification messages.
- If blocked due to unusual activity or heavy compromised traffic in the region, the block typically clears automatically after some time.
- If still unable to approve with Authenticator
- For a work or school account, contact the organization’s administrator and ask them to reset or re-register MFA methods so that Authenticator and other methods can be reconfigured.
- For a personal Microsoft account, use I don't have any of these on the verification screen to start the process of replacing security info and setting up working methods again.
Number matching behavior itself (when and how it appears) is controlled by the account’s security/MFA policy and cannot be changed from the app alone; using the configured alternative methods or having an admin reset MFA is required if number matching does not show.
