I want to get security code sent to new email or new phone number.

I cannot change primary email or add new phone number to my account since I only have option to send verification code to obsolete email or text to land line phone. I added new email to my account years ago but I only get option to send verification code to old shut down email or text to old land line phone number. You do not have any way to call real live person. This is very maddening. I followed instructions to use my wife's email to update account but got message to wait 30 days with no explanation of what to do in 30 days. I am very confused why I cannot have verification code sent to new email instead of old email. I cannot change phone number because I cannot receive verification code. Please help.

Because the existing security info (old email and landline) is what protects the account, it must be used to approve changes. When that info is obsolete or has been replaced, Microsoft enforces a 30‑day protection period before new security info can fully take over.

Based on the described situation, there are two likely states and corresponding actions:

    1. Security info change is already pending (30‑day wait)
    • When a new email (for example, a spouse’s email) is added as security info and the old info is removed or replaced, the account enters a “security info change is still pending” state for 30 days.
    • During this 30‑day period:
      • Verification codes continue to go to the old security info (if it still exists) or access may be restricted.
      • Support agents cannot override this or send codes for you.
    • After the 30 days:
      • The new email/phone becomes active security info.
      • At that point, verification codes can be sent to the new email/phone.
    • If the “pending” message was triggered by an action not recognized, use the built‑in link on that screen (such as Let us know) to report an unauthorized change, or Cancel this request if the change was started but the old security info is still accessible.
    1. No usable security info and need to recover the account If the password is known but there is no access to any of the listed security info:
    2. Start signing in to the Microsoft account.
    3. At the Verify your identity prompt, select I don't have any of these.
    4. Follow the steps to replace security info.
    5. Once replacement is completed, there is a mandatory 30‑day wait before signing in with the updated info.
      • If the old security info becomes available during those 30 days, it can still be used to sign in, but doing so cancels the pending update.

If the password is not known and no security info is accessible:

    1. Use the account recovery form described in Help with the Microsoft account recovery form and submit via Recover account.
    2. Provide as much accurate information as possible to prove ownership.

Why codes cannot be sent to the new email/phone immediately

    • Verification codes can only be sent to:
      • The primary alias, or
      • Another email/phone that has already been added and fully confirmed as a way to verify sign‑in.
    • When all previous security info is removed or replaced, Microsoft enforces the 30‑day delay to prevent attackers from quickly locking out the real owner.
    • During this time, support agents are not allowed to send verification codes, password reset links, or change account details.

    What can be done now

    1. If a 30‑day security info change is already pending:
      • Wait for the 30 days to complete. After that, sign in and use the new email/phone to receive codes.
      • Do not attempt repeated changes during this period, as that can restart or complicate the pending state.
    2. If no pending change is visible and no security info is accessible:
      • Use I don't have any of these during sign‑in to start the security‑info replacement flow and accept the 30‑day wait.
    3. If sign‑in is blocked or fails repeatedly:
      • Use the Sign‑in helper to diagnose sign‑in issues.
      • If still stuck, go to Contact Microsoft Support, sign in with any other Microsoft account (or create a new one), and choose a support path under account security. Support cannot bypass verification but can guide through the correct recovery flow.

    After regaining full access

    • Go to Advanced security options and:
      • Add at least one current mobile phone and one email as security info.
      • Avoid changing or removing all security info at once to prevent another 30‑day restriction.
