Hello,

I have a valid Microsoft Office 2016 Professional Plus (PC) single-activation key. The activation was lost after a virtual machine hardware/firmware change. I need the activation count reset.

[Moderator note: personal information (product key) removed]

Kind regards
Panos

Office Home & Business, Home & Student, and Professional one-time purchases are licensed for a single computer. If activation is lost after a hardware change or moving to a different device, activation can be blocked because the maximum number of activations for that key has been reached.

For retail one-time purchases (not volume/MAK keys), the supported way to move Office 2016 to new hardware is:

    1. Install Office 2016 on the new or changed device.
    2. Activate by telephone, following the steps in the activation wizard.
    3. Uninstall Office from the original device once activation is successful on the new one.

The activation count reset itself cannot be done through self-service tools; it is enforced by the activation infrastructure and the Software License Terms. If the key is a volume license (for example, MAK) rather than a retail key, it is subject to installation limits and is managed by the organization that owns the volume agreement; in that case, contact the organization’s administrator.

If the key is reported as no longer valid (for example, error 0xC004C060), the key has been blocked and cannot be reset; the guidance in that case is to contact the seller for a refund and, if necessary, purchase a new license.

Do not post full product keys publicly; treat them as confidential and work only with the original seller or Microsoft support through official channels.
