Microsoft 365 features that help users manage their subscriptions, account settings, and billing information.
Office Home & Student 2021 and Office Home & Business 2021 are both one-time purchases that are permanently linked to the same Microsoft account once redeemed. They cannot be “removed” from the account or transferred to a different email, and there is no deactivation function for these products.
To avoid the license conflict and make sure Office uses Office Home & Business 2021 (which includes Outlook) instead of Office Home & Student 2021:
- Confirm the correct license on the account
- Go to the Services & subscriptions page: https://account.microsoft.com/services
- Sign in with the same Outlook.com account used to activate both products.
- Verify that Office Home & Business 2021 appears there.
- Remove existing Office from the computer
- Uninstall all Office apps from the device so there are no conflicting installations.
- For Windows: follow the steps in Uninstall Office from a PC.
- For Mac (if applicable): follow Uninstall Office for Mac.
- Reinstall and activate using Office Home & Business 2021
- Still on https://account.microsoft.com/services, under Office Home & Business 2021, select Install.
- Download and run the installer.
- When prompted to sign in, use the same Outlook.com account. Office will activate against the Home & Business 2021 license.
Important points based on the product type:
- For Office Home & Student / Home & Business / Professional and individual apps, there is no way to deactivate or remove the license from the account. To change which product is used on a device, uninstall Office and reinstall/activate following the correct product’s process.
- If activation issues or “Unlicensed Product” messages appear after reinstalling, use the activation troubleshooting steps in Unlicensed Product and activation errors in Office and ensure sign-in is with the same account that owns Office Home & Business 2021.
If problems continue after these steps (for example, Outlook 2021 still behaves incorrectly), contact Microsoft consumer support for direct assistance, as they can remotely check the account and installation.
