How to restore my Authenticator

I’m in urgent need of assistance.

I recently reset my phone, and unfortunately, I’m now completely locked out of my authenticator app with no way to restore access. This has affected my ability to log into critical accounts, and I need guidance on how to recover or reconfigure it as soon as possible.

Kindly advise on the steps I can take to regain access or reset my authenticator.

You can reach me via: ******@yahoo.com ******@gmail.com

I would truly appreciate your prompt support on this.

Follow these steps based on how Authenticator was set up and what is still accessible.

    1. Check device type and backup compatibility
    • Authenticator backups can only be restored on the same device type (iOS → iOS, Android → Android). Accounts backed up on iOS cannot be restored on Android and vice versa.
    1. If using iOS and had iCloud backup enabled
    2. Ensure on the new/reset iPhone that:
      • iCloud Drive is enabled.
      • iCloud Keychain is enabled.
      • iCloud Backup is enabled.
    3. Install Microsoft Authenticator from the App Store.
    4. Open Authenticator and sign in.
    5. For each account, sign in to complete the restore.
      • For Microsoft personal accounts using one-time password (OTP) codes, the codes become available once restored.
      • For Microsoft personal accounts with passwordless sign-in, only the account name is restored; sign-in is required again.
      • For work or school accounts, only the account name is restored; sign-in is required again.
      • For 3rd party accounts (Amazon, Facebook, Gmail, etc.), OTP codes are restored.

    References for iOS steps:

    1. If using Android and had cloud backup enabled
    2. On the Android device, open Microsoft Authenticator.
    3. Before signing in, select Restore from backup or Begin recovery.
      • If already signed in and do not see these options, sign out of all accounts in Authenticator first, then reopen the app. Learn how.
    4. Sign in to the recovery account using the same personal Microsoft account used when backup was configured.
    5. After restore:
      • If an account shows Sign in to restore your account, tap Sign in and complete password and email/phone verification.
      • If an account shows Action required, tap the account, then tap the tile and choose the option to sign in to recover, then complete password and additional verification.
    6. If restore options do not appear in Authenticator
    • If Restore from backup or Begin recovery is not visible when opening Authenticator, remove or sign out of all accounts in the app, then reopen it and look again for the restore options. Learn how.
    1. If backup account (Microsoft/iCloud) cannot be accessed
    • If Authenticator credentials cannot be restored because the backup account (Microsoft account on Android, iCloud on iOS) cannot be accessed:
    • Support agents cannot restore Authenticator data if the backup account itself is inaccessible.
    1. If restore still fails
    • If restore is not possible for any other reason, accounts must be added to Authenticator again using each service’s security/MFA settings. Learn how.
    • For work or school accounts where MFA blocks sign-in and there is no access to Authenticator:
      • If there is a Global Administrator in the tenant, that admin can reset MFA methods or require re-registration for the affected user so MFA can be configured again. Refer to: Manage user authentication options.
      • If the locked-out user is the only Global Administrator and cannot access the admin portal, contact Microsoft support by phone and request the Data Protection team to reset the authentication methods for the admin account, as described in the Q&A guidance.
    1. If phone was lost or stolen
    • If the device was lost or stolen (rather than just reset) and this affects a work or school account, notify the organization’s Help desk so they can clear MFA settings. After clearing, the account will be prompted to register MFA again at next sign-in.
