A Microsoft app for iOS and Android devices that enables authentication with two-factor verification, phone sign-in, and code generation
Try the following steps in order on the device where Microsoft Authenticator freezes on the logo:
- Make sure the device is online
- Turn Airplane mode off.
- If currently on Wi‑Fi, switch to mobile data, or vice versa, to rule out a network issue.
- Update Microsoft Authenticator
- Open the device’s app store and update Microsoft Authenticator to the latest version. Microsoft does not support versions older than 12 months.
- In Authenticator, when it opens, go to Settings and ensure App updates is turned on.
- Check battery optimization and background restrictions
- In device settings, turn off battery optimization for Microsoft Authenticator so it can start and sync properly.
- Check notifications
- In Authenticator Settings > Notification Settings, make sure Show notifications is turned on.
- Check device date and time
- In device settings, ensure Date & time are correct and set to automatic.
- Check VPN and security apps
- If using a VPN, temporarily disconnect it and try opening Authenticator again.
- Make sure the device OS and other security apps (such as Microsoft Defender or Intune Company Portal) are up to date.
If the app still freezes after these steps and cannot be used to approve sign‑ins, use an alternate method (SMS, email, or other configured MFA method) where possible, or reset MFA methods via the account’s security settings or with help from the organization’s IT/admin.
